Assistant Professor in (arithmetic) algebraic geometry and number theory
Job Description
The Department of Mathematics of Utrecht University is looking to appoint an Assistant Professor with expertise in algebraic geometry, arithmetic geometry or number theory, in a broad sense. In collaboration with fellow staff members, you will contribute to educating the future generation of mathematicians and advancing the department’s research profile.
Your Job
You are a researcher who is eager to play an active role in all aspects of academic life in our department, with a balanced commitment to both research and teaching. You welcome opportunities for collaborations with members of the Utrecht Geometry Centre or the University at large. You will apply for external funds, alone or in consortia, to build and sustain your own strong research programme. In addition, you will supervise PhD candidates and postdocs, and organise relevant scientific meetings at a national or international level.
You will teach courses at a variety of levels, ranging from first-year undergraduate to advanced Master’s courses. This may also include service teaching. Master’s courses can be taught locally or as part of the national Master's programme, Mastermath. Teaching will account for 50% of your job, with a typical teaching load of approximately 120 contact hours per year. You will also supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses as well as smaller-scale projects. We encourage innovation in teaching; the University provides funding to support promising ideas.
By engaging in the daily life of the Mathematical Institute and taking on positions of responsibility, you will help shape the future of the department.
Please note that we are also looking for an Assistant Professor in Mathematical Modelling. More information about this position is available on our website.
Requirements
You will play a committed role in all aspects of academic life. Ideally, your eligibility is exemplified by:
- a PhD in mathematics or a related discipline, aligned with the described research areas;
- a collection of significant research achievements and a proven track record of international publications in leading journals;
- high potential for the acquisition of external research funds;
- proven ability or potential to supervise and mentor postdocs, PhD candidates, and Bachelor's and Master's students;
- commitment to inspiring and engaging teaching, with the ability to teach and develop courses for the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Mathematics, including service teaching, based on an in-depth understanding of current developments in the field;
- active involvement in, or ideas for, (inter)national scientific and societal activities, including public engagement and outreach;
A University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) should be obtained during the first years of the appointment. Utrecht University expects all to be proficient in English (level C1). If you do not have a command of Dutch, we ask for a willingness to learn the language within 5 years. Utrecht University will support you in this.
In view of our policy to improve the gender balance we strongly encourage people of all genders to apply. Diversity among group members enriches academic debate and contributes to the quality of research. Therefore, applicants from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
Conditions of Employment
a position for one year, with the prospect of permanent employment following a positive evaluation;
a gross monthly salary, depending on qualifications and experience, between € 4.728 and €6.433 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University also offers a range of its own schemes for employees. This includes arrangements for professional development, various types of leave, and options for sports and cultural activities. You can also tailor your employment conditions through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage you to keep investing in your personal and professional development.
