Assistant Professor in Brazilian History

The Department of History at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-accruing position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning August 16, 2026, in the field of nineteenth and early 20th century Brazil.

The ideal hire should be able to contribute to the History Department's intellectual growth and emphasis on interdisciplinary and collaborative research. Areas of specialization might include abolition, Indigenous histories, health and medicine, labor, culture, or diaspora. We welcome candidates whose research employs methodologies that complement the department's strengths in cultural, intellectual, and legal history. We also welcome applicants who incorporate digital history into their scholarship, public engagement, or teaching.

The appointee will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students in Gainesville, Florida, and maintain a robust research and publishing agenda commensurate with a Research 1 institution. Teaching responsibilities include introductory, upper-division, and graduate courses in Brazilian history. Equally important is the ability to contribute effectively to the department's graduate program: mentoring graduate students, offering graduate seminars, and chairing and serving on graduate committees (including serving on committees in other departments).

The faculty member in this role will be able to take advantage of the UF Libraries' outstanding Latin American collections, and will have the opportunity to benefit from the support, resources and activities of relevant programs on campus, including: the Center for Latin American Studies, Center for African Studies, Center for Arts, Migration and Entrepreneurship, the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere, and the Florida-Brazil Linkage Institute (FBLI). UF is also home to a robust Portuguese language and literature program, and an active Brazilian Student Association.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the departmental website (https://history.ufl.edu) to learn more about the Department of History.

UF is the state's oldest, largest, and most comprehensive land grant university with an enrollment of over 50,000 students and was ranked the Number 1 public university in the United States by Wall Street Journal in its “2024 Best Colleges in the U.S.” report. UF is located in Gainesville, a city of approximately 150,000 residents in North-Central Florida, 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and 67 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, and within a 2-hour drive to large metropolitan areas (Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville). The beautiful climate and extensive nearby parks and recreational areas afford year-round outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and nature photography. UF's large college sports programs, museums, and performing arts centers support a range of activities and cultural events for residents to enjoy. Alachua County schools are highly rated and offer a variety of programs including magnet schools and an international baccalaureate program.

Expected Salary: The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the compensation includes a full benefits package.

Minimum Requirements: Applicants will have a Ph.D. in History or a related field by August 15, 2026.

Special Instructions to Applicants: For full consideration, applications must be submitted online. A complete application includes (1) a letter of application summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, and suitability for the position, (2) a complete curriculum vitae, (3) a statement of research goals (approximately 400 words), (4) a statement of teaching philosophy (approximately 400 words), and (5) the names of three references.
