Assistant Professor in Comparative Literature

Vibrant, multidisciplinary and innovative, the Faculty of Arts and Science is one of Université de Montréal’s largest faculties. The Department of Literatures and Languages of the World offers a range of interdisciplinary programs that explore a diversity of cultural and linguistic contexts and forms of expression. Our programs in Comparative Literature are a vital section of the department. Our faculty regularly works with colleagues and students from other sections and programs, including the Digital Humanities, and collaborates with various research centres and initiatives.

The person selected must be comfortable working in multidisciplinary and plurilingual contexts and will be expected to contribute to emphasizing critical theory in comparative literature, with a specialization in French literature and Spanish-language literatures of Latin America. An additional specialization in women’s and gender studies and/or inter-American relations is an asset.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through undergraduate and graduate-level teaching and research activities, you will contribute to the Faculty’s pursuit of excellence. You will also promote your discipline and participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. In this position, you will:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and participate in the supervision and training of students in critical theory of comparative literature, modern French literature and Spanish-speaking literatures of Latin America, while demonstrating active commitment to the principles of EDID (equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization);
  • Supervise MA and PhD students and serve on graduate student juries;
  • Develop an independent, innovative, and high-quality research program in the field of comparative literature;
  • Participate in team and center research networks and contribute to their development through your initiatives;
  • Obtain funding from major funding bodies;
  • Participate in activities that promote the discipline (publications, conferences, scientific activities, and others);
  • Contribute to the functioning of the institution by serving on various committees and working groups.

Qualifications

  • Completed Ph.D. in comparative literature, with at least one specialization in modern French literature and Spanish-language literatures of Latin America; an additional specialization in women’s and gender studies and/or inter-American relations would be an asset;
  • Excellent record of research and publications in recognized journals in the field;
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality university education and supervision;
  • Demonstrated potential to develop institutional, inter-university, and international collaborations;
  • Ability to work as part of a team in an interdisciplinary context and in collaboration with faculty members;
  • Adequate proficiency in the French language or commitment to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
