Assistant Professor in Computer Science
The Computer Science Department at the University of Idaho seeks a tenure track assistant professor commencing Fall 2025 to support the growth and development of our cybersecurity programs. We will consider candidates from any area of cybersecurity, with an earned PhD in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a closely related area, evidence of the ability to grow a cutting-edge, strong, externally funded interdisciplinary research program, and evidence of strong teaching capability.
Cybersecurity is a priority for the Computer Science Department, the University of Idaho, and the State of Idaho. In 1999 the University of Idaho was one of the first seven institutions in the country to be designated an Academic Center of Excellence for Cyber Defense education by the National Security Agency. We have continued to make cybersecurity an important feature of our academic and research programs. Building on this decades long track record in cybersecurity we have recently created several new degree programs in cybersecurity, which are growing rapidly. We are hiring faculty to support this and future growth.
The University of Idaho has a research center dedicated to cybersecurity research: the Center for Secure and Dependable Systems. Additionally, we have research centers dedicated to robotics: the Center for Intelligent Industrial Robotics (CI2R), data science: the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences, transportation: the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and modeling: the Institute for Modeling Complex Interactions. Significant interdisciplinary research collaborations and well-established working relationships, including joint appointments, exist with National Labs and regional industry.
The successful candidate will have an earned PhD in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a closely related area, have established a successful, collaborative research program, and evidence of strong teaching capability. Candidates are expected to maintain a successful, collaborative, externally funded research program and to support the teaching mission of the department at all levels and provide service to the university community. Startup funding, research support, and a reduced teaching load will be extended to help the new appointee.
The University of Idaho is a land-grant research institution founded in 1889. It has a strong tradition of research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The CS department has expertise in cybersecurity, robotics, software engineering, embedded systems, ML, data science, programming languages and databases. This position will complement these existing strengths and leverage a large body of existing opportunities to collaborate across the University including our main (Moscow) and branch campuses (Idaho Falls and Coeur d'Alene).
