Assistant Professor in Directing and Devising (Tenure-Track and 2-Year Limited Term)

The Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance at the University of Regina invites applications to two Assistant Professor positions, one tenure-track and one 2-year term, both in Directing and Devising in the Department of Theatre. The Department of Theatre launched a BFA in Devised Performance and Theatre Creation (the only program of its kind in Western Canada) and BA in Drama and Theatre Studies in 2022.

In this vibrant new BFA program, the successful candidate will be responsible for facilitating large and small devised projects and directing departmental productions. They will also teach acting and may have the opportunity to teach in other specialized areas of theatre performance and production. This program has enabled us to critically rethink and reimagine theatre training today, and we welcome artist-scholars who engage with new, pluralistic, culturally conscious, and rigorous theatre methodologies to help train the theatre artists of tomorrow.

We seek a candidate who demonstrates expertise in and has a dynamic and engaged record of theatre/performance-creation and demonstrates significant creative-critical output at the professional/peer-reviewed level with the ability to connect theory to practice. Preference will be given to those with a substantial record of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level and an active artistic practice.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate substantial engagement with devising/collective creation, non-traditional theatre creation practices and possess the ability to teach across the curriculum. They should have significant experience directing large mainstage productions, intimate black-box studio shows, as well as site-specific and/or off-site projects. Further, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional or successful teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: physical theatre, improvisation, musical theatre, digital/multimedia/composition, site-specific theatre, dramaturgy and new play creation/playwriting. Candidates should also be willing to teach and supervise graduate students. We seek a collaborative, flexible artist-scholar who will positively engage with our local communities and our diverse student body, who champions process over product while working collaboratively and creatively on large and small-scale student productions. We are looking for a candidate who openly engages with anti- racist and decolonial ideologies, and we encourage applications from individuals who identify as members of underrepresented communities in Canadian theatre and within the academy.
