Assistant Professor in Economics

ABOUT THE ROLE

Mount Royal University is accepting applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Economics to commence July 1, 2026. The economics program at MRU is an essential component of our multidisciplinary Policy Studies degree, which consists of economics, policy, and political science. We also offer three economics related minors: economics, finance and economics, and international business and economics. We are also in the early stages of developing a new Bachelor of Arts in Economics, subject to final approval.

The successful candidate will join the Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies Department at the level of Assistant Professor and will be expected to either have an established research agenda or the ability to immediately develop a research program. Research and service opportunities may include supervision of research assistants or Honours students. The successful candidate will be expected to teach six 3-credit hour courses per academic year (typically 3 courses in the fall semester, 3 courses in the winter semester). Class sizes typically average between 35-40 students.

Inquiries about the position may be directed to Dr. Kari Roberts, Chair of the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies at kroberts@mtroyal.ca.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate is expected to have a completed PhD in economics, or a completed PhD near the time of hiring.

As Mount Royal University is a teaching focused institution, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in both micro- and macro-economics. Priority will be given to candidates with an applied research agenda (quantitative or qualitative), and to those with a specialization in political economy. The ability to teach courses in research methods, data analytics, Canadian public sector economics, and courses within our policy studies degree program, would be an asset.

APPLICATIONS

Interested applicants should submit the following materials:

  1. Cover letter that describes the candidate’s interest in the position, qualifications, and potential contributions to Mount Royal University
  2. Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. Research Portfolio, including:
    • Statement of research interests/expertise
    • Proposed research plan for the upcoming 5-year period
    • Sample publication (PDF only—maximum of 1 publication)
  4. Teaching Portfolio, including:
    • Statement of teaching philosophy, interests and accomplishments (max 1000 words)
    • Sample syllabi that demonstrate teaching across junior and senior undergraduate levels, including sample syllabi from undergraduate economics courses, if available
    • Sample student evaluations and peer/chair teaching evaluations if available

Academic reference letters are not required with the application, but as the competition progresses, candidates may be asked to provide three confidential references.

Closing Date: February 15, 2026. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
