Offer Description
The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Environmental Engineering. The Faculty's goal is to strengthen its degree programs and research with respect to engineering methods that enhance sustainable development. The new Assistant Professor is expected to lead teaching and research within the fields of water resources and renewable energy engineering. Particular emphasis is placed on the following fields: Cold climate hydrology and/or hydraulics, harnessing hydro-, wind and/or tidal energy, large datasets such as climate models and satellite data, hydraulic and energy infrastructure. The Assistant Professor is based on main campus in Reykjavík. According to the University of Iceland's rules, the duties of academic staff are divided into three main components: research, teaching, and administration.
Main tasks
- Engage in internationally recognized research, publish peer-reviewed scientific articles, attract external research grants, and actively participate in international projects and collaborations
- Develop master's and doctoral studies in the field and advise Civil- and Environmental Engineering graduate students
- Develop, teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate courses
- Perform academic service and management duties

Skills/Qualifications
- A doctoral degree in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering.
- University-level teaching experience.
- Experience in organizing courses, laboratory sessions, and supervising final projects at the university level is desirable.
- Research activity in the field, evidenced by, among other things, publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience in securing research grants is an advantage.
- Experience participating in international research projects is an advantage.
- Expertise in cold climates, natural hazards, and the built environment is an advantage.
- Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
- Good skills in written and spoken English.
- The ability to teach in Icelandic is an advantage. It is required that B1 proficiency be attained within four years of appointment. The University of Iceland offers assistance in acquiring the necessary language skills.
The applicant must fulfill the requirements of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and become a Chartered Engineer in Iceland within a year of starting the position.

Wages according to the current collective agreement by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and Félag háskólakennara.
The expected starting date is no later than August 1st 2027.
The position will be filled for a term of five years, with the possibility of a permanent appointment thereafter, cf. Paragraph 3, Article 31 of the Rules of the University of Iceland No. 569/2009.

The application must indicate which of the applicant's publications, up to eight in total, are considered most significant with regard to the position in question.
