Assistant Professor in Environmental Humanities

The Department of Art History, Cinema, and Audiovisual Media offers teaching that covers diverse artistic movements up to the present day, while giving space to a multiplicity of theoretical and methodological approaches, as well as to artistic productions from different geographical areas.

The successful candidate will address the pronounced needs of our student community, which, concerned about ecology and worried about the impact of the climate crisis, increasingly wishes to explore the various ways in which art and art history can reflect on ethical and political questions related to these challenges. The envisioned position will stimulate collaborations within the department, particularly in areas such as indigenous studies, ecofeminism, queer ecologies, animal studies, landscape and garden art, and issues related to decolonization and the more-than-human world.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Develop an innovative, high-level research program in environmental humanities;
  • Supervise graduate students;
  • Actively participate in the academic life and functioning of the Department of Art History, Cinema and Audiovisual Media, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Université de Montréal through contributions to committees and working groups;
  • Contribute to the development of the discipline through conferences, publications and major scientific events.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with cultural institutions, associations, or services, both locally and internationally.

Qualifications

  • Hold a PhD or be in the process of obtaining it before taking up the position in art history, or a related field;
  • Have an excellent publication record in art history and environmental humanities; the record must demonstrate influence among experts in the field;
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality academic teaching and student mentoring;
  • Demonstrate the potential to develop internal, national and international collaborations;
  • Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
