Assistant Professor in Geomatics (Tenure Track)

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University (Laurier) invites applications for a Tenure Track Faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking a Geographer specializing in Geomatics to begin July 1, 2026, subject to budgetary approval. The Waterloo campus will be the primary location for this position; however, teaching responsibilities may include instruction at the Milton and Brantford campuses via in-person or virtual delivery.

Anticipated Salary Range: $90,000 to $140,000. Actual salary to be commensurate with experience.

Qualifications
Applicants should hold a PhD in Geography, Geomatics, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Urban Planning, Environmental Management or a closely related discipline at the time of the appointment. In addition, the candidate should demonstrate clear potential to develop an independent, externally funded research program through a record of scholarly outputs, appropriate to their career stage, including publications, research funding, awards, knowledge mobilization, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

The successful candidate will bring strong theoretical expertise in one or more of the following areas: spatial data theory, big spatial data, applications of remote sensing to environmental and socio-environmental system, applications of machine learning within geospatial domains, and GeoAI. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in geographic information science, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and cartography, with a focus on experiential and community-engaged learning in partnership with local governments. They will also supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and contribute service to the university.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research is grounded in formal training in geomatics or geospatial sciences and who will actively employ advanced geospatial techniques, including one or more of the following: spatial database design and implementation; GeoAI; spaceborne/airborne sensors; and UAVs/drones. Research applications may include geographic information science, environmental impact assessment, climate science, sustainability, and urban or cold regions research.

In collaboration with departmental colleagues, the successful candidate will play an important role in shaping the future direction of the department. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working across sub-disciplinary boundaries, creating a culture of inclusion, and engaging in community service and professional development. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute service to the University and academic community, and to scholarly and/or professional activities.
