Assistant Professor in Mathematical Modelling

Job Description

Join the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University as an Assistant Professor in Mathematical Modelling. Together with the other staff members, you will educate the future generation of mathematicians and advance research. We welcome applications from the broad area of mathematical modelling, with a focus on real-world applications. This includes statistics, uncertainty quantification, data analysis, signal processing, (mathematical foundations of) machine learning, and dynamical systems.

Your Job

In this position, you will divide your time roughly equally between research and teaching (approximately 50% each).

You will further develop your research line individually and in collaboration with other scientists, including colleagues from other departments. You will apply for external funds, supervise PhD candidates and postdocs, and organise relevant scientific meetings at national or international level. You will also actively initiate efforts, or continue to apply, your research to real-world problems in medicine, biology, climate, physics, imaging, or other domains.

You will teach courses at a variety of levels, from first-year Bachelor's to advanced Master's courses. Master’s courses can be taught either at the local level or as part of the national master programme, Mastermath. You will be involved in the supervision of Bachelor's and Master's theses as well as smaller-scale projects. We value and encourage teaching innovation, offering University funding opportunities for developing new ideas and methods.

By engaging in the daily life of the Mathematical Institute and taking on positions of responsibility, you will help shape the future of the department.

Please note that we are also looking for an Assistant Professor in (arithmetic) algebraic geometry and number theory. More information about this position is available on our website.

Requirements

You play an active and committed role in all aspects of academic life. Ideally, your eligibility is exemplified by:

  • a PhD in mathematics or related discipline, preferably related to the research areas described;
  • a collection of significant research achievements and a proven track record of international leading publications;
  • high potential for the acquisition of external research funds;
  • a research focus connected to at least one field of application, and demonstrated experience or motivation to engage with real-world applications;
  • proven ability or potential to supervise and mentor postdocs, PhD candidates, Bachelor's and Master's students;
  • commitment to inspiring and engaging teaching and the ability to teach courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Mathematics and related disciplines, based on an in-depth understanding of current developments in the field;
  • a committed role in or ideas for (inter-)national activities in scientific and/or societal communities;
  • commitment to obtaining the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) if you do not yet have it.

Utrecht University expects all to be proficient in English (level C1). If you do not have a command of Dutch, we ask for a willingness to learn the language within 5 years. Utrecht University will support you in this.

In view of our policy to improve the gender balance we strongly encourage people of all genders to apply. Diversity among group members enriches academic debate and contributes to the quality of research. Therefore, applicants from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Conditions of Employment

a position for one year, with the prospect of permanent employment following a positive evaluation;

a gross monthly salary, depending on qualifications and experience, between € 4.728 and €6.433 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));

8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;

a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University also offers a range of its own schemes for employees.
