Assistant Professor in Mathematical Modelling

Job Description

Join the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University as an Assistant Professor in Mathematical Modelling. Together with fellow staff members, you will educate future generations of mathematicians and advance research in the field.

We welcome applications from the broad area of mathematical modelling, especially those focused on real-world applications. Relevant areas include:

  • Statistics
  • Uncertainty quantification
  • Data analysis
  • Signal processing
  • (Mathematical foundations of) machine learning
  • Dynamical systems

Responsibilities

In this position, your time will be divided roughly equally between research and teaching (about 50% each). You will:

  • Develop your independent research line and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Apply for external research funding.
  • Supervise PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Organise national and international scientific meetings.
  • Apply your research to real-world challenges in areas such as medicine, biology, climate, physics, or imaging.
  • Teach Bachelor’s and Master’s level courses, locally and through the Mastermath programme.
  • Supervise student theses and small-scale projects.
  • Contribute to teaching innovation and curriculum development.
  • Engage actively in the life of the Mathematical Institute and take on service roles that shape the department’s future.

Qualifications

We seek an active and committed academic who demonstrates:

  • A PhD in mathematics or a related discipline, preferably aligned with the research areas listed above.
  • A strong record of research achievements and international publications.
  • Potential to acquire external research funding.
  • Experience or motivation to apply mathematical research to real-world problems.
  • Ability or potential to supervise postdocs, PhD candidates, and students.
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching in Mathematics and related fields.
  • Willingness to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) if not already held.
  • Active engagement in scientific and/or societal communities.

Applicants must be proficient in English (C1 level). If you do not yet speak Dutch, you are expected to learn it within 5 years; the university provides support for this.

Offer

  • Initial appointment: 1 year, with the prospect of a permanent position upon positive evaluation.
  • Salary: €4,728 – €6,433 gross per month (full-time, scale 11, per CAO NU).

The Faculty of Science consists of six departments—Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Information & Computing Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics—and focuses on excellence in both research and teaching.

The Mathematical Institute is internationally recognized for its work in pure and applied mathematics. It runs the Bachelor's and (English-taught) Master's programmes in Mathematics and collaborates extensively with other fields including:

  • Computational life sciences
  • Mathematical biology
  • Theoretical computer science
  • Atmospheric and ocean sciences
  • Theoretical physics

You will join the Mathematical Modelling Group, which works closely with other departments and institutes such as IMAU, RIVM, UMCU, and CWI.
