Position Description:
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Texas State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Physical Geography with a specialization in climatology to begin Fall 2027. We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship focuses on climatic processes at a range of spatial and temporal scales and their interactions with the Earth’s spheres and environmental systems.
We seek a scholar whose research will complement the department’s existing strengths in water resources, geomorphology, environmental hazards and disasters, energy resources, community resilience, and human–environment interactions.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active, externally visible research program; seek external research support; publish in scholarly outlets; teach undergraduate and graduate courses in climatology and related areas in the candidate’s area of expertise; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; and contribute service to the department, university, discipline, and broader community.
Texas State University is located in San Marcos, a city of about 75,000 residents situated in the beautiful Central Texas Hill Country, 30 miles south of Austin and 48 miles north of San Antonio. Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree in Geography or a related field, with a specialization in climatology, by time of appointment.
- Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scholarship in climatology, oceanography, and/or environmental systems research.
- Demonstrated or potential ability to develop a strong research agenda.
- Demonstrated or potential ability to teach climatology, meteorology, oceanography, quantitative methods, or related environmental systems courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated record of research that applies climatology to complex environmental challenges.
- Demonstrated record of using research methods such as field methods, quantitative methods, advanced modeling, or GIScience and remote sensing.
- Demonstrated or potential ability securing external research funding.
- Demonstrated or potential ability to advise graduate students.
