Job Details

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Mathematics, UNLV Honors College [R0149339]

ROLE of the POSITION

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track (NTT), Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Mathematics in the Honors College. At UNLV, the “in-Residence” label refers to teaching positions with a service component but no research requirement. The Honors College seeks candidates whose teaching and service have prepared them to enhance our commitment to student development in higher education. The position is promotable through traditional rank. It is not a visiting position. The successful candidate will be employed as a member of the Honors College – not the Department of Mathematics. The anticipated start date is August 2026.

We seek a Mathematics instructor primarily for first year math courses and occasional upper division Honors seminar classes for the Honors College. The faculty member’s main duties are to teach Calculus I and Calculus II to Honors students using technology relevant to classroom pedagogy. Typically, Honors College faculty have a teaching load averaging 12 credits of teaching a semester. The majority of Honors College courses are in person, although there are online and hybrid courses offered.

The successful candidate is also expected to mentor Honors College students, supervise Honors research thesis projects, collaborate with Honors College faculty and staff, and participate in appropriate levels of service to the college, university, and community.

PROFILE of the HONORS COLLEGE

The Honors College at UNLV is a small, selective college within the university that offers an exceptional undergraduate core experience for highly motivated students. The Honors College provides students with a liberal arts experience in addition to their academic majors. The combination of a central Honors intellectual core and specialized learning in a major discipline helps develop graduates who are fully prepared to succeed in graduate and professional schools and in rewarding careers.

The Honors College at UNLV currently has 10 faculty-in-residence specializing in a variety of disciplines and approximately 1,200 students. Class sizes range from 16-24 students to ensure a small, dynamic learning experience and a relationship-rich experience. Honors College faculty are expected to utilize innovative and interactive teaching methods while also maintaining rigor and high academic standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Ph.D. in Mathematics or related discipline from a regionally accredited college or university. The degree must be awarded prior to the start of employment.

Applicants must also demonstrate a proven record of transformative teaching that includes experience teaching Calculus I and Calculus II at the college level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess a background in statistics and/or data science in addition to having demonstrated excellence in teaching Calculus I and Calculus II courses.

Experience studying or working in an Honors College/Program environment is preferred.

Candidates are invited to highlight any experience teaching service-learning and/or interdisciplinary courses, as well as online courses.

Candidates are also encouraged to emphasize innovative teaching methods or course design.

COMMITMENT to DIVERSITY and CAMPUS VALUES

A successful candidate will support and contribute to a respectful, positive work environment. They will use our Campus Values to guide their decisions and actions and demonstrate our Rebel spirit.

SALARY

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions.

HOW TO APPLY

Submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, recent teaching evaluations, a sample syllabus for a Calculus I or II course, and a one-page teaching philosophy statement that includes the role of technology.

Applicants should fully describe their qualifications and experience, with specific reference to each of the minimum and preferred qualifications because this is the information on which the initial review of materials will be based. Candidates are encouraged to describe previous activities mentoring high-achieving college-level students.

Applicants who are chosen for on-campus interviews will be asked to supply the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least three professional references who may be contacted. References will not be contacted until the search chair notifies you in advance.

Materials should be addressed to Dr. Bryan Bornholdt, Search Committee Chair, and must be submitted electronically through Workday, as we do not accept emailed materials. For assistance with the application process, please contact UNLV Human Resources at (702) 895-3504 or UNLVJobs@unlv.edu.

Although this position will remain open until filled, the search committee’s review of candidates’ materials will begin on or around December 1, 2025.

Applications must be submitted electronically through Workday. Please note that emailed materials will not be accepted.
