Summary: International documentary competition for the recruitment of an Assistant Professor in the disciplinary area of Agronomic Engineering of the Department of Biosystems Sciences and Engineering of the School of Agriculture.
It is hereby announced that an international documentary competition is open at the School of Agriculture of the University of Lisbon (hereinafter referred to as the “School”), for a period of 30 working days from the day following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República [Portuguese Official Gazette], for the recruitment, under a public employment contract, of an Assistant Professor in the disciplinary area of Agronomic Engineering of the School of Agriculture of the University of Lisbon, pursuant to Articles 37 to 51, 61 and 62-A of the Statute of the University Teaching Career, republished by Decree-Law No. 205/2009 of 31 August, as amended by Law No. 8/2010 of 13 May (hereinafter referred to as the ECDU), and other applicable legislation, in particular the General Regulations governing recruitment competitions for Full, Associate and Assistant Professors at the University of Lisbon, approved by Rectoral Order of 16 February 2015 and published in Series II of the Diário da República, No. 45, by Order No. 2307/2015 of 5 March (hereinafter referred to as the Regulations).
The successful candidate will enter into a public employment contract of indefinite duration in the category for which this competition has been opened, subject to a five-year probationary period.
Joint Order No. 373/2000, of 31 March, issued by the Minister for State Reform and Public Administration and the Minister for Equality, establishes that the following statement must be included in recruitment and promotion competitions:
“In compliance with Article 9(h) of the Constitution, the Public Administration, as an employer, actively promotes a policy of equal opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional advancement, taking scrupulous measures to prevent any form of discrimination.” Accordingly, the terms ‘candidate’, ‘successful candidate’, ‘professor’ and other similar terms used in this Notice are not intended to refer to the gender of individuals.
Likewise, no candidate may be privileged, favoured, disadvantaged or deprived of any right, or exempted from any duty, on grounds including ancestry, age, sexual orientation, marital status, family situation, economic situation, education, social origin or condition, genetic heritage, reduced working capacity, disability, chronic illness, nationality, ethnic origin or race, territory of origin, language, religion, political or ideological beliefs, or trade union membership.
In accordance with Articles 37 to 51 of the ECDU, the remaining applicable legislation, and Article 8 of the Regulations, the following provisions shall apply:
I — Authorisation Order of the Rector
The opening of this competition was authorised by an Order dated 14 August 2026 issued by the Rector of the University of Lisbon, following confirmation of the existence of adequate budgetary provision and that the position now open for competition is provided for and vacant in the School’s staffing plan, where it is characterised as requiring its holder to perform teaching and research activities assigned to an Assistant Professor in the disciplinary area of Agronomic Engineering of the Department of Biosystems Sciences and Engineering.
II — Place of work:

III — Admission requirements and grounds for exclusion of candidates
III.1 — Pursuant to Article 41-A of the ECDU, only holders of a doctoral degree may be admitted to this competition.
III.2 — The provisions of Chapter VI of the Regulations shall apply with regard to the verification of and compliance with the requirements for admission and exclusion of candidates.
III.3 — Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must hold recognition of their doctoral degree pursuant to Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, in its current wording.
III.4 — The recognition of the doctoral degree referred to in the preceding paragraph must be obtained by the end of the period granted for entering into the employment contract, where the candidate ranked in a position eligible for recruitment obtained the doctoral degree abroad.
III.5 — Candidates of foreign nationality, except candidates from countries where Portuguese is an official language, must demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level C1, in accordance with the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This requirement must be officially recognised through certification of proficiency in Portuguese as a Foreign Language issued by the Centre for Evaluation and Certification of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CAPLE).
III.6 — Candidates must meet the requirement referred to in the preceding paragraph by the closing date of this competition, where applicable.
III.7 — Failure to submit any of the documents required for the application within the specified deadline and under the terms set out in this Notice shall result in the application not being admitted. This shall be subject to analysis and decision by the President of the School of Agriculture prior to the Selection Panel’s decision on absolute merit.
IV — Admission requirements based on absolute merit
IV.1 — The provisions of Article 10 of Chapter III of the Regulations shall apply with regard to the admission of candidates based on absolute merit.
IV.2 — The Selection Panel shall decide on approval or rejection based on absolute merit through a justified roll-call vote, with abstentions not permitted.
IV.3 — A candidate shall be deemed approved on absolute merit where they obtain favourable votes from more than half of the voting members of the Selection Panel.
IV.4 — A vote against approval on absolute merit must be based on one or more of the following circumstances:
a) The doctoral degree is not in Agronomic Engineering, or in a related field of knowledge and/or specialisation compatible with the duties to be performed in the disciplinary area of Agronomic Engineering; and/or
b) The relevance, quality and current relevance of the candidate’s curriculum vitae, and of the most relevant and highest-impact academic contributions selected by the candidate, are clearly insufficient for the performance of the duties of an Assistant Professor (set out in V.1); and/or
c) The Scientific and Pedagogical Projects prepared by the candidate, specified in V.5 e) and V.5 f), contain serious shortcomings or inaccuracies demonstrating that the candidate does not have the necessary ability to perform the duties adequately.
V — Parameters for evaluation and ranking based on relative merit, their respective weighting and final scoring system:
V.1 — The purpose of this competition is to assess the candidates’ ability and performance in the different aspects which, pursuant to Article 4 of the ECDU, form part of the duties to be performed should they be recruited following the competition. Pursuant to Article 4 of the ECDU, university teaching staff are generally responsible for:
a) Carrying out scientific research, cultural creation or technological development activities;
b) Providing the teaching service assigned to them and supervising and advising students;
c) Participating in university extension activities, scientific dissemination, and the economic and social valorisation of knowledge;
d) Participating in the management of their respective university institutions;
e) Participating in other tasks assigned by the competent management bodies that fall within the scope of university teaching activities.
V.2 — Pursuant to Article 5(3) of the ECDU, Assistant Professors are responsible for teaching practical or theoretical-practical classes and providing services in laboratory or fieldwork activities in undergraduate and postgraduate course units, as well as coordinating course units in these programmes. They may also be assigned duties equivalent to those of Associate Professors where they have completed five years of effective service as university teaching staff and service conditions so permit.
V.3 — The selection method to be used is curricular evaluation. The curricular evaluation, taking into account the general duties assigned to university teaching staff by Article 4 of the ECDU and the provisions of Article 50(6) of the ECDU, Article 5(4) and Article 11 of the Regulations, shall cover the following areas:
a) Pedagogical Ability;
b) Scientific Performance;
c) Extension, Scientific Dissemination and Economic and Social Valorisation of Knowledge, hereinafter referred to in this competition as Extension and Knowledge Transfer;
d) University Management;
e) Scientific Project;
f) Pedagogical Project.
The areas indicated in points c) and d) shall be considered within the scope of Article 50(6)(c) of the ECDU, concerning other activities relevant to the mission of the Higher Education Institution. Once the candidates approved on absolute merit have been identified, they shall be ranked according to relative merit.
V.4 — The evaluation of the candidates’ relative merit for ranking purposes shall be based on the weighted sum of the scores awarded for the evaluation parameters set out below, on a scale from 0 to 100 (where 0 is the minimum and 100 the maximum).
The evaluation parameters take into consideration the activities carried out by the candidate in the areas of pedagogical ability, scientific performance and other activities relevant to the mission of the higher education institution, as well as the scientific and pedagogical projects. The aforementioned evaluation components must demonstrate an appropriate connection with the disciplinary area for which the competition is opened, specifically in the field of Viticulture.
Particular value shall be given to the degree of connection with the wine-growing sector demonstrated through experience in applied research and consultancy activities carried out in collaboration with companies in the sector, aimed at the development, innovation and optimisation of viticultural production systems from an integrated and value-chain perspective. The competencies to be assessed shall be based on in-depth knowledge of ampelography, grapevine biology and ecology, vineyard establishment, training and management systems, and the implications of different management systems and production technologies for grape yield and grape and wine quality. Candidates must additionally demonstrate the ability to respond to emerging challenges associated with climate change, sustainability and the digitalisation of viticulture.
V.5 — The parameters to be considered in the curricular evaluation of candidates in each of the areas listed in V.3, and the weighting assigned to each in the final classification, are as follows:
a) Pedagogical ability (10%):
i. Teaching activity (5%): This parameter takes into account the course units taught by the candidate, including their number, diversity, coordination and evaluation of teaching performance, with particular emphasis on teaching experience in the disciplinary area for which the competition is opened;
ii. Supervision, guidance and evaluation of students (5%): The evaluation of this parameter shall take into account the number and diversity of students supervised and advised, as well as participation in academic examination panels.
b) Scientific performance (30%):
i. Scientific publications (15%): a parameter taking into account books, book chapters, articles in scientific journals and proceedings of international conferences of which the candidate was an author or co-author, considering: Their nature; Impact factor; Number of citations; Technological level; Innovation; Diversity; Multidisciplinarity; International collaboration; The importance of the contributions to advancing the current state of knowledge; The importance of the works selected by the candidate as the most representative, particularly with regard to their contribution to the development and evolution of the disciplinary area for which the competition is opened;
ii. Coordination of and participation in scientific projects (10%): a parameter taking into account the candidate’s participation in and coordination of scientific projects awarded through competitive calls, considering: Geographical scope; Scale; Technological level; Importance of the contributions; Innovation; Diversity;
iii. Recognition by the international scientific community (5%): a parameter taking into account: Awards from scientific societies; Editorial activities in scientific journals; Participation on editorial boards of scientific journals; Coordination of and participation in programme committees for scientific events; Delivery of invited lectures at scientific meetings or universities; Participation as a member of scientific societies with competitive admission procedures and other similar distinctions.
c) Extension and Knowledge Transfer (25%):
i. Scientific and technological dissemination publications (5%): a parameter taking into account articles in national journals and conferences and other scientific and technological dissemination publications, considering their professional and social impact;
ii. Provision of services and consultancy (15%): a parameter taking into account participation in activities involving the business community and the public sector, considering the type of participation, scale, diversity, technological intensity and innovation;
iii. Services to the scientific community and society (4%): a parameter taking into account participation in and coordination of scientific and technological dissemination initiatives and considering their nature and the results achieved, where undertaken with: The scientific community, particularly through the organisation of congresses and conferences; The media; Companies and the public sector.
iv. Professional training activities (1%): a parameter taking into account participation in and coordination of training activities aimed at companies and the public sector, considering their nature, technological intensity and the results achieved.
d) University management and management of groups carrying out experimental and research activities (5%).
e) Scientific Project (15%): a parameter considering the scientific project that the candidate proposes to develop, aimed at promoting and strengthening research activities in the disciplinary area of the competition, particularly viticultural production under different environmental conditions and different production management systems. The project shall be based on knowledge of the requirements and constraints associated with grape and wine production and quality, demonstrating contributions towards addressing emerging challenges in viticulture, particularly in the areas of sustainability and digitalisation.
This project, with a maximum length of 20,000 characters (including spaces), must demonstrate the relevance of the candidate’s areas of interest and research plans for the next 5 years, as well as how they expect to relate this research to teaching and other activities relevant to the development of the School’s mission and within the context of the disciplinary area.
f) Pedagogical Project (15%): a parameter considering the pedagogical project that the candidate proposes to develop with a view to promoting teaching activities in the disciplinary area of the competition. Particular value shall be given to the ability to integrate and enhance the application of viticultural technology, mechanisation and digitalisation tools in the teaching of viticulture, linking these dimensions with knowledge of crop requirements, management practices and production systems and methods.
The project, with a maximum length of 20,000 characters (including spaces), must demonstrate the relationship between the research plan that the candidate proposes to develop over the next five years and the teaching activities, as well as the pedagogical model and teaching strategies to be implemented to promote learning.
It must also demonstrate its relevance and contribution to the development of the School’s mission in the field of higher education and training in the vine and wine sector.
V.6 — Once the candidates approved on absolute merit have been definitively identified, based on the provisions of point IV above, the Selection Panel shall rank these candidates in accordance with the procedure established in Article 20 of the Regulations. The preferential parameters indicated in point VI may be used as qualification criteria for each of the parameters described in V.5.
VI — Preferential parameters
Preference shall be given to candidates who obtained their doctoral degrees less than 10 years ago. Preference shall be given to career paths focused on the subject areas covered by the competition.
VII — Public Hearings
VII.1 — At its first meeting, the Selection Panel shall decide whether public hearings should be held with all candidates approved on absolute merit. Such hearings are intended exclusively to clarify matters relating to the documents submitted by the candidates, as provided for in the Regulations and pursuant to Article 50(4)(b) of the ECDU.
VII.2 — The public hearings shall take place between the 20th and 50th days following the date on which the candidates are admitted on absolute merit, and all candidates shall be informed of the date and place of the public hearings at least 5 days in advance.
VII.3 — The public hearings referred to in the preceding point may be conducted by teleconference, and the Selection Panel must ensure that they are conducted under equal conditions for all candidates.
VII.4 — The Selection Panel may also request candidates to submit additional documentation relating to the curriculum presented, pursuant to Article 50(4)(a) of the ECDU.
VIII — Ranking of candidates
When ranking candidates in the competition, each member of the Selection Panel shall rank the candidates by scoring all the parameters listed above. Each member of the Selection Panel shall participate in the voting on the basis of their ordered list of candidates, in which tied rankings are not permitted.
Following application of the evaluation and ranking criteria, the Selection Panel shall draw up a single ranked list of candidates.
Pursuant to Article 20 of the Regulations, the Selection Panel shall vote initially for first place, then for second place, and so on, until all candidates admitted to the competition and previously approved on absolute merit have been ranked. In each vote, decisions of the Selection Panel shall be taken by an absolute majority of votes, and the methodology for ranking candidates shall be that set out in Article 20(5) of the Regulations, in compliance with Article 17 of the Regulations.
IX — Conditions for submission and documentation of applications:
IX.1 — Applications must be submitted in person or sent by registered post with acknowledgement of receipt to the School of Agriculture of the University of Lisbon, Tapada da Ajuda, 1349-017 Lisbon, within 30 working days following publication of this Notice in the Diário da República.
IX.2 — Failure to submit any of the documents required for the application within the specified deadline shall result in the application not being admitted. This shall be subject to analysis and decision by the President of the School prior to the Selection Panel’s decision on absolute merit.
IX.3 — The application must be accompanied by the respective application form for this Notice, available on the website at https://www.isa.ulisboa.pt/sites/default/files/documents/document/defau…, and the candidate must indicate their consent for communications and notifications relating to the competition procedure to be made by email, providing the relevant email address.
IX.4 — The application must include the following documents:
a) The candidate’s curriculum vitae (in PDF format), including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and university management activities considered relevant to the competition, in particular identifying the activities carried out in the different areas which, pursuant to Article 4 of the ECDU, form part of the duties to be performed by an Assistant Professor, taking into consideration the areas and evaluation parameters set out in point V.5 of this Notice and considered relevant to the disciplinary area for which the competition is opened. The candidate must structure the curriculum vitae in such a way as to facilitate the rapid and complete identification of their contribution to each of the subparagraphs of point V.5;
b) Indication of the “Researcher ID”/“Scopus Author ID” allowing identification of the list of publications, the respective number of citations, and the H-index according to the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science/Scopus platforms;
c) A document (in PDF format) containing the academic contributions most relevant to the disciplinary area of the competition, together with justification of their relevance;
d) An electronic version (in PDF format) of the scientific articles referred to in the preceding paragraph;
e) A document containing the scientific and pedagogical projects that the candidate proposes to develop within the subject areas of the competition, as specified in points e) and f) of V.5 of the Notice;
f) Other works that the candidate considers relevant for assessment by the Selection Panel;
g) A declaration on honour stating that the candidate meets the requirements for admission to the competition laid down in the Notice and by law (annexed to this Notice).
X — Language
The documents supporting the application must be submitted in Portuguese or English.
XI — Composition of the Selection Panel
Pursuant to Articles 45 and 46 of the ECDU and Article 14 of the Regulations, the Selection Panel shall comprise the following members:
