Assistant Professor in the Modelling and Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Policies and the Energy Transition
The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the modelling and analysis of greenhouse gas reduction policies and the energy transition.
REM is an applied graduate and undergraduate school in which both social and natural scientists apply inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to research in resource and environmental management. Our mission is to inspire leadership and improve decision-making in environmental management through internationally recognized research, education, professional practice, and community engagement to support a socially just and ecologically sustainable world. We value diversity in ways of knowing and scientific approaches and foster a culture of inclusion and mutual appreciation and respect.
There is an urgent need for research and its application to help advance solutions for climate change mitigation. We solicit applications from interdisciplinary social scientists whose research focuses on the challenging process of designing, implementing, and sustaining effective mitigation policies to transition energy systems to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. We invite applications from Ph.D. scientists with demonstrated expertise in the interdisciplinary aspects of economics, quantitative social sciences, policy analysis, and/or technological change. PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD.
The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized program of research, teaching, engagement, and knowledge mobilization aimed at improving climate change mitigation policy design and implementation. They will employ rigorous quantitative social science methods (e.g., simulation, statistical analysis, optimization, equilibrium, technology adoption modeling and analysis) to produce practical outputs that inform real-world climate policy design. The ideal candidate may consider taking on the leadership of the REM-based Canadian Energy and Emissions Data Centre (CEEDC; https://www.sfu.ca/ceedc.html) into their research program. While the energy transition is intended to be the main focus due to its urgency, research links to other sustainability challenges are encouraged.
The position will contribute energy- and policy-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in REM, effectively bridging concepts from multiple disciplines to provide a holistic view of the complexities of natural resources and environmental management. The successful candidate will be expected to teach an established undergrad interdisciplinary course in sustainable energy and climate (REM 350) as well as any of REM’s economics and policy courses (REM 321, REM 356W, REM 621, REM 644). They may also teach other undergrad and graduate courses in one or more research areas in REM, including but not limited to Introductions to Resource Management (REM 100, REM 200) and Systems Thinking (REM 221). This position aims to maintain these critical contributions in REM, while continuing to build interconnections with other natural and social scientists in REM, the Faculty of Environment, and SFU.
The expected start date is July 15, 2026.
