Assistant Professor in Urban Planning

The Faculty of Environmental Design of the Université de Montréal, founded in 1968, is home to three schools: the School of Architecture, the School of Design, and the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. Its mission is to advance knowledge and train high-calibre talent capable of transforming environmental design practices through research and innovation. The Faculty comprises some 20 research units and 23 educational programs, all dedicated to the study of human-environment interactions and the designing of built and natural spaces.

The École d’urbanisme et d’architecture de paysage (School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture) is recognized for the excellence of its teaching, its research and its contribution to the practice of urban planning and landscape architecture in Quebec. Our programs, which are accredited by the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec (OUQ) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA), are based on a studio approach and multi-scale design thinking.

Your contribution to our School will be to consolidate urban planning education and its relation with landscape architecture education in one of the following areas: urban development, urban planning, urban project, in response to major global environmental, technological and social issues.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Teach lectures and seminars for bachelor's and master's programs in urban planning, as well as for the doctoral program in environmental design;
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students, in both professional and research programs;
  • Develop a high-level research program in one of the following areas: urban development, urban planning, urban project;
  • Contribute to the integration of urban planning and landscape architecture training;
  • Actively participate in the academic life, operation and development of the School, the Faculty and the institution through contributions to committees and working groups;
  • Contribute to the advancement of research and practice in urban planning and to the reputation of the Université de Montréal through conferences, publications and other major scientific and professional activities.

Qualifications

  • Hold a PhD in urban planning, environmental design or a related discipline. Applications from individuals who have submitted their thesis may be considered;
  • Be a member or be potentially eligible for membership in the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec or the Canadian Institute of Planners;
  • Demonstrate an ability to produce high-level research;
  • Demonstrate an ability to provide high-quality teaching and supervision in urban planning at undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Have the ability and experience to work in a team in an interdisciplinary context and in collaboration with faculty members;
  • Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
