Assistant Professor in Women’s History
The Department of History at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a position in women’s history. This tenure-track appointment will be made at the assistant professor level, beginning July 1, 2026. The candidate selected will also be considered for appointment to the Ruby Heap Professorship in Women’s History.
Title of the Position: Assistant Professor. Appointment at a higher rank is subject to budgetary approval.
Duties: Responsibilities include: a) active research and knowledge mobilization program; b) teaching; c) recruitment and supervision of graduate students; d) service to the community. Maintain and develop a research program in women’s history. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in women’s history in both French and English. Recruit and train graduate students. Work collaboratively in research and service. Participate in administrative activities of the department.
Terms: New tenure-track position.
Salary: Salary scale for an assistant professor rank starts at $99,377 (as of May 1, 2025).

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a scholar in Women’s History with: 1. Be within the first seven years of their initial academic appointment. 2. Possess a doctorate (Ph.D.) by July 1, 2026 in History or a related discipline. 3. A demonstrated track record of research excellence, including peer-reviewed publications, in women’s history. 4. Excellent communication skills in either English or French. English-French bilingualism is an asset. Active knowledge of Canada’s two official languages (French and English) is a requirement for tenure. 5. Evidence of excellence in the teaching of history or of a related discipline. 6. Experience attracting and supervising graduate students is an asset.
Ruby Heap Professorship in Women’s History: The position is open with respect to the field of women’s history. The successful candidate will be considered for appointment to the Ruby Heap Professorship. The holder is expected to demonstrate commitment to innovative research and promote the role of women in history via publications, lectures, and media. This is for an initial five-year appointment with possibility of renewal, including an annual research fund of $25,000.
