Position description
The Department of Italian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Renaissance Italian Literature (1400-1600), with a secondary specialization in gender studies and/or critical race theory. In addition, we welcome applications from candidates working on a wide variety of critical approaches, including Mediterranean studies, environmental humanities, postcolonialism, visual culture, book history, material texts, digital humanities. The successful candidate will teach introductory and special topics courses in Renaissance Italian Literature, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and dialogue with the broader Renaissance/early modern community on campus.
Tenure-track Assistant Professors at Berkeley are expected to excel in research, teaching, and service. Elements of the position include the following: implementing a program of research that culminates in the publication of books and articles; developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate seminars and lecture courses; supervising dissertation research; and participating in various administrative activities in the Italian department and across the University.

We annually sponsor and co-sponsor a range of events, some on specialized academic topics, others of more general interest, most open to the public, including lectures, conferences, film screenings. We sponsor and support study abroad programs in Italy during the regular academic year and in the summer.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
