Institution Profile

Early history of Lakshadweep is unwritten. What now passes for history is based on various legends. Local traditions attribute the first settlement on these islands to the period of Cheraman Perumal, the last king of Kerala. It is believed that after his conversion to Islam, at the behest of some Arab merchants, he slipped out of his capital Cranganore, the present day Kodungallor – an old harbour town Kochi, for Mecca. When his disappearance was discovered, search parties went after him in sailing boats and left for the shores of Mecca, in search of the king from different places. It is believed that one of these sailing boats of Raja of Cannanore was struck by a fierce storm and they were shipwrecked on the island now known as Bangaram. From there they went to the nearby island of Agatti. Finally the weather improved and they returned to the mainland sighting other islands on their way. It is said that after their return another party of sailors and soldiers discovered the island of Amini and started living there. It is believed that the people sent there were Hindus. Even now unmistakable Hindu Social stratification exists in these islands despite Islam. Legends say that small settlements started in the Islands of Amini, Kavaratti, Andrott and Kalpeni first and later people from these islands moved to the other islands of Agatti, Kiltan, Chetlat and Kadmat. This legend of Cheraman Perumal is not, however, substantiated.

Required Educational Qualifications

Assistant Professor (English, Economics, Political Science, Commerce, Aqua Culture, Malayalam and Hindi)

• Master’s degree in the relevant subject with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade
• UGC NET/JRF (for Hindi, the NET/JRF must be in the subject concerned)

Assistant Professor (BBA Tourism)

• MBA in Tourism/Hospitality/Management, Master of Tourism Administration, Master of Tourism Management, Master of Tourism and Travel Management, Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management, or MBA in Business Administration
• Minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade
• UGC/CSIR NET and other qualifications prescribed by the apex body

Assistant Professor (Computer Science)

• Master’s degree (M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Tech. CSE or MCA) in Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related discipline
• At least 55% marks or equivalent grade from a recognized university
• UGC NET or a UGC recognized relevant test

Assistant Professor (English Education)

• Master’s degree in English with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade
• M.Ed. in English with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade
• UGC NET/JRF in Education

Assistant Professor (Physical Science Education)

• Master’s degree in Physics or Chemistry with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade
• M.Ed. with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade

Assistant Professor (Natural Science Education)

• Master’s degree in Zoology or Botany with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade

• B.E./B.Tech./B.S. in the relevant discipline with First Class or equivalent
• Desirable: Master’s degree in relevant disciplines with First Class or equivalent, or Ph.D. in the relevant subject
• Desirable: Experience as a lecturer in the relevant subject in a Govt. recognized polytechnic college

Lecturer (English, Chemistry and Physics)

• Master’s degree in relevant disciplines with First Class or equivalent
• UGC NET (for Chemistry and Physics, UGC or CSIR NET), or a similar UGC accredited test like SLET/SET, or Ph.D. in the relevant subject

Age Limit

The age limit is 22 to 60 years for teaching faculty. The notification also mentions 30 to 65 years for the post of Principal, but no Principal post is listed in this panel. Relaxation in qualifying marks for SC/ST/OBC and other categories will follow Government of India norms.

Required Experience

Experience is not compulsory for these posts. For most posts, 1 to 5 years of teaching experience in a Govt. recognized college or institution is a desirable qualification. One point is given for every 12 months of relevant experience, up to a maximum of five points.

Pay Scale/Pay Level

Remuneration of ₹750 per hour, subject to a maximum monthly ceiling of ₹22,500. Other terms will be as stated in the contract agreement set by the Department.
