Assistant Professor (Limited Term Faculty) in Architectural Design

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Architectural Science in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] invites applications for a Limited Term Faculty (LTF) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in areas of architectural design. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2026 for a one year term, subject to final budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will engage only in the teaching and service duties of faculty members in the Department of Architectural Science, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across such activities. Teaching load will consist of two studios and two courses per year, with a primary focus on undergraduate design studio and other courses aligned with expertise.

The successful candidate will have expertise in at least one of the following areas:

  • Adaptive reuse and Conservation
  • Building science
  • Construction documentation
  • Emerging materials, innovation and fabrication
  • Housing innovation
  • Indigenous knowledge
  • Introductory courses in architectural design and technical skills
  • Sustainability, decarbonization and life cycle assessment

The successful candidate must present evidence of:

  • an accredited architecture degree;
  • professional architectural experience;
  • teaching excellence in studio and one of the areas noted above. Teaching excellence may be demonstrated by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
  • a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) as it pertains to service and teaching, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department of Architectural Science and the University through collegial service.

Candidates who also present evidence of one or more of the following, will be given preference:

  • Professional licensure
  • An advanced degree in a related area
  • A record of established or emerging scholarly research and/or creative (SRC) activity, including the capacity for engaging with emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity (including professional practice) that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline
  • Demonstrated experience with professional or community stakeholders in the AEC industry

Note: Limited Term Faculty appointments at Toronto Metropolitan University may not exceed a combined total of four years. Applicants with prior Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) LTF appointments need to consider this limitation, as it may render them ineligible to apply.

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca]. ... The minimum salary for the Assistant Professor rank is $103,916.30 per annum. Salary will commensurate with qualifications.
