Assistant Professor, Mathematics
Assistant Professor in Computational Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics at University of San Diego seeks applicants for one tenure-track Assistant Professor in computational mathematics to begin Fall 2026. We are seeking candidates with expertise in any area of mathematics who study or apply computational techniques such as artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, statistics, formal methods, numerical methods, computational modeling, computational complexity, or algorithm analysis. We are especially interested in candidates experienced in teaching with computational tools who can work alongside current faculty to incorporate such ideas into the undergraduate math curriculum.
The ideal candidate will be able to teach existing lower-division courses, including algebra, calculus, and statistics. Their specific expertise will support the department's commitment to incorporating computational elements into these courses, preparing all students for an increasingly data-driven world. We are especially interested in candidates who are invested in or have experience with inclusive pedagogy that supports student success in and enjoyment of mathematics. A typical teaching load is 3 undergraduate courses per semester.
Successful candidates will hold an advanced degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field. ABD candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis. They must have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and inclusive pedagogical practices, and have expertise in the broadly defined area of computational mathematics.
Posting Salary: $7,000-7,334/month; Excellent Benefits. The University of San Diego offers a very competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, a retirement contribution, and access to on-campus Fitness Centers.
Special Application Instructions: Applications must consist of a cover letter, including an explanation of what draws you to teach at a liberal arts school like the University of San Diego; curriculum vitae; three letters of recommendation, at least one addressing teaching; teaching statement discussing commitment to inclusive pedagogical practices; and research statement. For full consideration, submit applications by November 15, 2025. Questions should be directed to Dr. Michael Shulman, search chair, at shulman@sandiego.edu.
