Applications are invited for a tenure-track, academic-year Assistant Professor position in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences at the University of Rhode Island to begin Fall 2026. We are seeking to attract a diverse pool of job applicants for this position. The department has 16 research faculty members, 8 teaching faculty members, and 16 graduate teaching assistants. We offer programs leading to BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in mathematics, with applied mathematics options at all levels. We co-govern the Data Science Program, which houses a BA, BS, online graduate certificate, and online MS degree. The interdisciplinary nature of our department will provide the new faculty member with opportunities to interact with a broad range of colleagues in areas such as Oceanography, Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, and Life Sciences.

The research activities of the faculty in our department lie in the areas of combinatorics and graph theory, complex dynamical systems, computational mathematics, data science, difference equations, financial mathematics, mathematical biology and modeling, numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, applied probability/statistics, partial differential equations, scientific computing, applied analysis, and mathematics education.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses, in line with departmental needs and the candidate's expertise areas, publishing original research in peer-reviewed academic journals, seeking external funding, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and engaging in departmental, college, and university service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field by the time of appointment August 2026.
  2. Research interests in graph theory, combinatorics, or network science.
  3. Demonstrated ongoing research program and sustained record of publications, commensurate with academic experience.
  4. Ability to contribute to our graduate research program and supervise M.S. and Ph.D. students, commensurate with academic experience.
  5. Ability to become an effective teacher of mathematics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  6. Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  7. Commitment to seeking external funding appropriate to research interests.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Preferred areas of research: extremal, probabilistic, or algebraic graph theory.
  2. Postdoc or other relevant industry experience.
  3. Potential to interact productively with researchers working in the priority areas of the University of Rhode Island and its College of Arts and Sciences such as: quantum computing, the Blue Economy, artificial intelligence, life sciences, and other interdisciplinary fields.

The University of Rhode Island is a medium-sized public university located near the southern end of the state in picturesque New England. The main campus is located in Kingston, an established, family-friendly, small community only five miles from Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Rhode Island's proximity to the ocean moderates its weather compared to other New England States. The region offers excellent outdoor recreational activities, good public-school systems, and ready access by car or public transportation to Providence, Boston, New Haven, and the New York City metropolitan areas and airports.
