Applications to the open call may be submitted by those who meet the conditions specified in Section 113 of the Act – Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018 (Journal of Laws 2024 item 1571 as amended).
The open call is conducted in accordance with the principle of equal treatment in employment and it is open to all persons who fulfil the requirements included in the open call announcement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- conducting research in the discipline of history,
- participation in the realisation of the research project „The Subaltern Retinue: 'Family' of the Early Modern Apostolic Nuncios (1559-1700)”, in particular: conducting archival research at institutions such as Archivio Apostolico Vaticano and Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, as well as other European archives, under the guidance of the project coordinator, as well as editing, analysis and publication of research results related to the project's subject (detailed information concerning the projects’ subject and the scope of the planned research can be found on the website of the National Science Centre, Poland: https://projekty.ncn.gov.pl/en/index.php?projekt_id=629669),
- participation in the work of the research team,
- participation in the popularization of research results and preparing scientific publications as part of the project,
- realization of organizational tasks connected with the functioning of the unit and the project in accordance with the Individual Assignment of Duties.

Skills/Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (obligatory):
- PhD in humanities in the discipline of history or in a related discipline,
- recent, high-scoring scientific achievements in the discipline of history (publications indexed in Scopus or in Web of Science will be rated higher),
- history of significant international scientific activity (e.g., a documented internship abroad, participation in international conferences),
- experience in conducting research in the discipline of history, in particular in the analysis of the early modern diplomatic correspondence and other archival materials concerning diplomatic practice,
- experience in conducting archival research, in particular in the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana or comparable foreign archives,
- very good Italian skills and good Latin skills, enabling work with historical sources,
- good written and spoken English skills, sufficient for the preparation of scientific publications as part of the project,
- readiness for scientific mobility, including conducting archival research abroad (financed in full from the project’s sources).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (recommended):
- experience in working in a research team,
- German skills,
- experience in applying for external research funding through participation in competitive grant programmes.
Specific Requirements
- The candidate obtained their PhD no more than 12 years before employment in the project (regarding the possibility of prolonging this period: Regulations of financing the National Science Centre, Poland for the OPUS 28 competition https://www.ncn.gov.pl/sites/default/files/pliki/uchwaly-rady/2024/uchwala84_2024-zal1.pdf),
- The candidate has obtained their PhD in a higher education institution other than the University of Silesia in Katowice, or they have had a minimum of 10 months of continual, documented post-doctoral internship in an institution other than the University of Silesia in Katowice and in a country other than where they obtained their doctoral degree,
- During the period when the candidate receives the remuneration for their full-time work in the project, the candidate shall not receive any remuneration from the funds assigned as part of direct costs in research projects financed by the National Science Center, Poland,
- During the period when the candidate receives the remuneration for their full-time work in the project, they shall not receive any remuneration arising from the employment contract concluded with any other employer, nor from the employer with residence beyond Poland.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- full-time employment on the basis of the fixed period employment contract (24 months) as part of the research project NCN OPUS 28, titled “The Subaltern Retinue: 'Family' of the Early Modern Apostolic Nuncios (1559-1700)” led by Dorota Gregorowicz, PhD,
- employment at the University as a primary place of work,
- task-based working time,
- the remuneration for the position is based on the project assumptions and on the funds secured in its budget; the upper limit of funding for the base remuneration, including the seniority bonus for this position, is 8986 PLN per month and cannot be exceeded; the final amount of the base remuneration depends on the candidate's individual situation, in particular on the seniority bonus to which the candidate is entitled.
- the fixed remuneration component – seniority bonus in the amount of 1% of the base remuneration for every year of employment from the fourth year of work, provided that the amount of the component does not exceed 20% of the base remuneration,
- the variable remuneration components and monetary benefits or benefits in kind (e.g. additional annual remuneration, awards, and other co-financing possibilities), employee pension programme in accordance with the acts and internal regulations of the University of Silesia in Katowice,
- additional, paid options selected at the employee’s discretion on the basis of a declaration submitted by the employee (e.g. private life insurance, private medical package of the employee’s choice, group pension scheme),

- motivational letter referring to the candidate’s fulfillment of the open call requirements,
- curriculum vitae (CV),
- documents confirming the candidate’s qualifications (including the PhD diploma or certificate of granting the PhD degree),
- list of publications (the committee recommends that the most significant publications are in reverse chronological order),
- other documentation defined in the open call requirements.
Selection process
SCHEDULE OF THE CALL:
- application submission deadline: 30 of September 2026 (11.59 p.m. CET)
- the selection process will be concluded by: 29 of November 2026
OPEN CALL PROCEDURE:
Applications received after the deadline, incomplete applications and applications submitted in any other way than defined in the open call announcement shall not be considered.
The open call is conducted and concluded by the open call committee appointed by the Rector. The open call procedure consists of two stages:
- the formal assessment of the submitted documents,
- merit-based evaluation of the candidates.
The formal assessment is preceded by the initial verification of the submitted documents confirming fulfillment of the requirements defined in the open call announcement. In the case of doubts, the open call committee may call the applicant to complete the documentation within the defined period of time.
The open call committee prepares a list of persons whose applications fulfill the open call requirements to the greatest extent and invites them for an interview.
The interview may take place in person or by using electronic means of communication. The invited candidates may be asked to prepare additional materials for the presentation of their candidacy during the interview.
In the case of applications submitted by persons who already have a history of employment at the University of Silesia in Katowice, the selection committee will also take into account the opinions of the candidate’s superiors.
The open call committee may resign from conducting the interview if they state that the applications submitted in the open call do not fulfill the open call requirements.
The open call is concluded by way of a resolution adopted by the open call committee by secret ballot with a simple majority of votes.
The applicants are notified about the results of the open call. The applicants have a right to appeal against the open call committee’s decision in writing within 7 days from the day they are notified of the result of the open call. The appeal shall be considered by the Rector within a period of a maximum of 30 days.
The final, binding decision on the employment of the candidate selected and recommended by the open call committee is made by the Rector.
The University reserves the right to leave the call unresolved.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The condition necessary for employment of the candidate selected in the selection proceedings is the fulfillment of the obligations arising from Section 265(4), (5), (13) of the Act – Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018 (Journal of Laws 2024 item 1571 as amended).
In the case of applying for employment at the University of Silesia in Katowice as the primary place of work, candidates employed in other higher education institutions as their primary place of work, should, as of the day of their employment, fulfil the requirement defined in the art. 120, section 2 of the Act – Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018 (Journal of Laws 2024 item 1571 as amended), according to which an academic may have only one primary place of work at a time.
In the case of a person selected as a result of the open call selection procedure, who has obtained their academic degree, their degree in arts or their professional title abroad, and whose academic degree, degree in arts or their professional title has not been recognized as equivalent to the adequate Polish degree or title, employment of such a person is possible in accordance with the art. 116 section 2a of the Act – Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018 (Journal of Laws 2024 item 1571 as amended), in accordance with the procedure in force at the University or on the basis of the nostrification procedure, for which the candidate shall apply.
