Department Summary: Bridgewater State University’s Department of Health and Kinesiology is a hub for innovative adapted physical education. The department houses majors in Exercise Physiology, Health Studies, Health Science (pre-Occupational Therapy, pre-Physical Therapy, and pre-Athletic Training), Physical Education (Athletic Performance and Health Fitness, Motor Development Therapy/Adapted Physical Education, Recreation, Teacher Licensure), and Public Health, as well as minors in Adapted Physical Education/Activity, Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Coaching, Recreation, Health Promotion, and Health Resources Management. Graduate offerings include an MS in Physical Education and an MEd in Health Promotion. The Department of Health and Kinesiology is part of the cohesive BSU campus community that provides professional opportunities for faculty advancement in teaching and scholarship and a clear path to tenure. Funding for faculty scholarship is available through the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship as well as the Office of Teaching and Learning. There is also a significant institutional commitment and resources for international engagement and student research.
Through hands-on learning and community engagement, we prepare public and community health professionals, educators in physical and adapted physical education, coaches, and fitness leaders to provide exceptional leadership and enhance quality of life across the region and the Commonwealth.
Essential Duties: The Department of Health and Kinesiology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Adapted Physical Education. We seek an innovative educator and scholar with expertise working with people with disabilities across the lifespan in a range of movement settings.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of scholarly inquiry and a commitment to inclusive, student-centered teaching. We are particularly interested in candidates who employ inquiry-based and active learning approaches that inspire and support students from diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will:
- Teach undergraduate courses in adapted physical education, motor development, and the physical education core.
- Provide holistic advising to students in the physical education major.
- Serve as an academic liaison to the Children’s Physical Developmental Clinic (CPDC) and support undergraduate student engagement and participation in the CPDC.
- Mentor undergraduate research projects and supervise students’ field experiences.
- Contribute to departmental and university service and actively engage in community partnerships.
- Participate in curriculum development, program review, and accreditation activities that strengthen the department’s academic programs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and university/community service.

Required Qualifications:
- Earned doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, EdD) in Adapted Physical Education, Physical Education, Motor Development, or a closely related field completed by August 31, 2026.
- Experience working with special populations in physical education, physical activity, or sport.
- Strong commitment to teaching excellence and supporting first-generation college students in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional certifications such as CAPE
- Experience working in a clinic similar to the Children’s Physical Developmental Clinic.
- Demonstrated commitment to scholarly activity, including publications, presentations, workshops, or creative endeavors.
- Interest and ability to incorporate high impact teaching practices (e.g., undergraduate research, service learning, global engagement) to enhance learning.
- Familiarity with or openness to adopting innovative technology to foster engaged student learning.
- Experience or openness to participating in undergraduate program review.
- Experience or interest in working collaboratively and in a collegial manner.
