Assistant Professor of Anthropology (Tenure-track)

DePauw University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer: Women, members of underrepresented groups, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Position will remain open until filled.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at DePauw University invites applications for a tenure-track position in cultural anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2026. Ph.D. (completed by August 2026) in anthropology is preferred; ABD candidates will be considered at the rank of Instructor. A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal-arts setting and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching are essential. The department specifically seeks a cultural anthropologist specializing in Indigenous studies. The geographic focus of the position is open, and we welcome candidates studying Indigeneity anywhere in the world. However, candidates should have teaching expertise in Indigenous North America and be able to teach courses related to Indigenous populations in the United States. The teaching responsibilities include three courses per semester, in addition to a half-credit course taught every third year during DePauw’s January or May term. This position includes employee health and retirement benefits, mentoring, and faculty development funding. Funding is also available for research with undergraduate students.

In addition to courses on Indigenous North America, candidates must be able to contribute to teaching the following courses in the anthropology core curriculum: introductory cultural anthropology; ethnographic methods; anthropological theory; and senior seminar. We invite applicants whose pedagogy engages with issues of social justice and structural power. Potential research specializations include, but are not limited to, Indigenous language revitalization and reclamation; anti- and decolonial social and political movements; visual and expressive culture; the relationship between Indigeneity and Blackness; law and social justice; religion, belief systems, and wisdom traditions; land, dispossession, and migration; and political economy. We seek an anthropologist who works collaboratively with Indigenous communities in a way that can contribute substantively to emerging national and international conversations on Indigenous rights, respect, and partnerships.

Candidates should submit through Workday:

  • a cover letter summarizing qualifications;
  • CV;
  • a one-page statement of teaching philosophy;
  • a one-page statement of scholarly interests;
  • evidence of effective teaching, such as sample syllabi and course evaluations
  • and a copy of graduate transcripts.

Contact information for professional references may be requested at a later date.

Application materials should provide evidence of a commitment to successfully fostering and engaging with a diversity of ideas and experiences to create an inclusive environment in the classroom and at the University. Review of applications will begin October 6 and continue until the position is filled.
