Position: Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics
Effective Date: August 17, 2026 (Fall Semester)
Salary Range: The Assistant Professor AY 2025-26 classification salary is $74,652 to $158,688/year ($6,221 to $13,224/per month). The anticipated hiring range is $88,000 to $95,000/per year ($7,330 to $7,920/per month). Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, or a related discipline by August 1, 2026.
- Demonstrated commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented and underserved populations in STEM.
- Ability to teach computational and applied mathematics courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
- Demonstrated potential to establish an ongoing research program in computational and applied mathematics.
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Successful teaching experience at the university/college level with a diverse student body.
- Experience or demonstrated potential for integrating undergraduate and graduate students in research projects.
- Ability to complement existing teaching expertise and research programs in the department, college, or university.
- Research experience and publication records in Computational Mathematics, Scientific Machine Learning, Mathematics Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, High-Performance Computing, or Optimization.
- Successful experience at the post-doctoral level or in industry, ideally including interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Potential for developing/maintaining a funded research program.
- Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body.
- Experience mentoring or supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom.
Duties:
- Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate applied math courses in Computational Mathematics, Scientific Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or Data Science. Periodically teach late afternoon or evening graduate level courses. The University provides reduced teaching load for beginning tenure track faculty members. (Mode of Instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
- Participate in professional development to improve teaching effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain a research program which leads to publications in refereed journals.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students (e.g., academic advising, scholarly projects, etc.).
- Participate in departmental activities and initiatives, including efforts to prepare students for successful careers and further education, and to develop/improve curricula.
- Participate in service to the department, college, university, and profession/community.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics comprises approximately 30 tenured/tenure-track faculty members across four disciplinary groups. Faculty teach mathematics, statistics, and math education courses and provide mentorship.
