The Chemistry Department at the University of Redlands is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and serves both undergraduate major and minor students in Chemistry and Biochemistry, as well as students completing general education requirements in the College of Arts and Sciences. Experiential learning, faculty-student interaction, and collaborative research are central to the Department’s mission. Faculty and students have opportunities to collaborate with neighboring institutions, including Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), UC Irvine, and the Keck Graduate School, creating a dynamic and collaborative academic environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach courses and laboratories in Biochemistry and General Chemistry, with the possibility of teaching Organic Chemistry lectures and laboratories, for the equivalent of six classes per academic year.
- Develop and maintain a productive research program that actively involves undergraduate students in meaningful research experiences.
- Provide academic advising and mentorship to students from diverse backgrounds, including those who may have limited prior exposure to chemistry.
- Engage in scholarly activity that contributes to the Chemistry Department and the University community.
- Contribute to departmental, college, and university service, including committee work and participation in departmental assessment and program reviews.
- Participate in faculty-student collaborative learning opportunities, service learning initiatives, and campus-wide events that advance the University’s mission.
Qualifications Guidelines
Experience/Training/Education:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry (with specialization in Biochemistry or a related field). ABD candidates may be considered; if the Ph.D. is not complete at the time of appointment, the candidate may begin at the rank of Instructor and transition to Assistant Professor upon completion of the degree within an agreed-upon timeframe.
- Evidence of strong dedication to teaching in a liberal arts environment.
- Demonstrated experience or commitment to working effectively with students from diverse cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to design and teach undergraduate-level biochemistry and chemistry courses, both lecture and laboratory.
- Capacity to build and sustain a productive undergraduate research program.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to foster collaborative learning and mentorship in a close-knit academic setting.
- Commitment to departmental and institutional service.
Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
