Assistant Professor of Coastal Engineering

The Department of Physics and Engineering Science in the Gupta College of Science at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2026 in support of its Engineering Science program. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical, Civil, Ocean/Coastal engineering, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. Proven expertise and research interests in the field of Ocean/Coastal engineering are required. Special preference will be given to applicants with interdisciplinary qualifications or experience. Applicants must be teacher-scholars who will establish research agendas that involve undergraduate students and teach introductory engineering courses, as well as upper-level courses in their area of expertise. The position also requires engaging engineering students through active advising and mentoring of extracurricular groups. Start-up funds will be available to establish a research agenda that incorporates undergraduate students.

Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine miles from the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the baccalaureate and master’s degrees of national and/or regional significance in the arts and sciences, business, humanities, education, and health and human services, a specialist degree in instructional technology, and PhD degrees in marine science: coastal and marine systems science and education sciences.

The Gupta College of Science works to provide a premier and experience-driven STEM education to all of its students. As one of the largest colleges at the University, the Gupta College of Science offers an impressive array of distinctive undergraduate degree programs, focused concentrations, and minors along with master’s and doctoral degree programs. The college is committed to providing students and faculty with cutting-edge scientific equipment, instrumentation, and marine vessels for both teaching and research purposes. The Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies within the Gupta College of Science also offers the potential for collaboration with faculty engaged in related coastal and marine research issues. The University also manages the Waites Island Anne Tilghman Boyce Coastal Reserve, an undeveloped complex of ocean frontage, fresh and saltwater marshes, tidal creeks, and upland forests, that provides a living laboratory for both teaching and research opportunities.

Required Qualifications: Must hold the appropriate terminal degree or meet the established alternative qualifications, and exhibit strong potential for excellence in teaching.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Current knowledge and mastery of demonstrable skills in area of expertise with ability and willingness to effectively communicate them to students and colleagues is required.

Job Duty: Teaches students in the classroom and/or laboratory.

Job Duty: Prepares content, syllabi, and University Moodle/curricular site for each course and/or lab assigned each semester. Communicates to students after reviewing assignments. Calculates and assigns grades (e.g., mid-term and final) through established procedures listed in the Faculty Manual and University catalog. Tracks and reports absences as directed by the Office of the Registrar.

Job Duty: Posts and holds regular office hours each week per College and University guidelines. Engages in University-related activities including committee assignments, meetings, ceremonies, events and scholarly pursuits as prescribed in the Faculty Manual.

Job Duty: Conducts research to create and add knowledge in a field, including the advancement of new theories and principles to improve educational effectiveness. Trains students in related research techniques.

Job Duty: Performs other duties as assigned.
