Assistant Professor of Dance – Visual and Performing Arts

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Hampton University houses programs in Dance, Theatre, and Art seeks a dynamic faculty member to join our team beginning Fall 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Teach undergraduate courses in Dance, including foundational ballet, modern, and contemporary technique, choreography, dance theory, dance history, and performance practices.
• Contribute to the scholarly and artistic advancement of the department, school, and university through an active program of creative practice, research, and professional activity.
• Seek external support through grants and collaborations; participate in service activities to the department and university, including committee work.
• Advise students and maintain regular office hours to support student success.
• Contribute to curriculum development, program assessment, and student mentorship.
• Additional duties as assigned by the department chair.

Qualifications:

• Terminal degree in Dance or a closely related field; or significant professional and scholarly credentials appropriate to the rank being considered (MFA or Ph.D. or equivalent strongly preferred).
• Evidence of effective teaching at the college/university level and demonstrated commitment to student learning and success.
• A professional record or demonstrated potential in creative/dance practice, scholarly work, and/or performance.
• Ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive academic environment and to collaborate with colleagues across departments and disciplines.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• A strong teaching portfolio in dance technique, repertory, and choreography.
• Experience with grant writing, grant management, or external funding.
• Experience in community engagement, outreach, or interdisciplinary collaborations.

We will consider hiring at the Assistant Professor level; higher ranks may be considered based on qualifications and experience.
