Assistant Professor of Education

The Austin College Education Department invites applications for a tenure-track position: an Assistant Professor of Education with a disciplinary focus in elementary-level curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Candidates with additional expertise in one of the following areas will be especially considered: educational leadership, learning theory and science, or learning technologies. Candidate must have PhD or EdD in hand before the position begins in August 2026. Candidates must have a proven record of at least three (3) years of successful teaching experience in an Early Childhood – 6th grade classroom.

The Education Department currently offers a Minor in Education and prepares future teachers for EC-12 certification through its Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). In the fall of 2026, we will offer two new majors in Elementary and Secondary Education to prepare teachers for certification through an undergraduate pathway. This position will be instrumental in curriculum design and delivery of these new and highly anticipated degrees.

Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) courses in: Education and Society, instructional preparation and methodology for elementary social studies and science, classroom design for learner success, responsive pedagogy, and research and assessment for teachers. An additional assignment will include either learning theory and science or leadership for educators, depending on the candidate’s secondary area of expertise.

The standard 9-month teaching load is 3 courses per semester, plus a three-week January Term course every other year, and a First-Year Seminar every fourth year. In addition, faculty are expected to participate in campus service, faculty governance, and to mentor students as academic advisors. The successful candidate will have strong commitments to innovative teaching in a liberal arts environment and to fostering and encouraging student engagement and belonging in their classroom through their pedagogy.

Hiring decisions for the position will be based on applicants’ professional experiences and academic expertise. We invite applicants to demonstrate in their letter of application how they can contribute to the department’s mission to develop responsive educators who continually adapt to learners’ needs, engage in critical reflection, and lead with purpose to advocate for and transform learners, communities, and the teaching profession.
