The Department of English in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time, limited term (2 years) Assistant Professor of English (Teaching). The anticipated start date is 1 January 2027 or a mutually agreed upon date.
The successful applicant will teach across the undergraduate curriculum and in a variety of formats, settings, and modalities. As such, we seek a candidate with evidence of a successful, innovative, and reflective teaching practice; a commitment to undergraduate success; and an ability to teach at all undergraduate levels. The candidate should be prepared to participate meaningfully and productively in departmental service, undergraduate honours supervision, and collegial governance. This is a teaching-focused position, and the successful candidate also will be expected to contribute to a culture of pedagogical excellence (within the department and throughout the university) including the mentoring of graduate teaching assistants. The regular workload in the teaching-focused stream is typically 7 courses per year (or 3/3/1 over the Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters).
We seek a candidate with an ability to teach a range of introductory English courses and demonstrated teaching and research expertise in at least two of following fields: Medieval to Early Modern Literature; Popular Genres (Comics, Detective Fiction, Fantasy); Indigenous Literatures; Modernism; Global Literatures and/or Literatures of Immigration and Diaspora. Candidates should clearly specify in the letter of application their areas of expertise from the list above and associated teaching experience.
Qualifications:
- PhD in English Literature
- Documented success in teaching English literature at the undergraduate level
- Demonstrated ability to teach across undergraduate programs in a variety of learning settings (e.g. seminar, large lecture, community-based teaching, workshop, online)
- Demonstrated capacity and willingness to contribute to pedagogical excellence in the Department of English, including the training and mentorship of graduate teaching assistants
- Experience with and interest in course development, curriculum design, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are assets
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility including respect for Indigenous ways of knowing and being
- Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively and to participate in collegial governance
