Assistant Professor of Film Studies

Job Details

The School of Writing, Literature, and Film at Oregon State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Film Studies. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work aligns with our University’s Strategic Plan (leadership.oregonstate.edu/strategic-plan/three-goals) and who can contribute to the OSU Story Lab (storylab.oregonstate.edu), a research storytelling initiative.

We seek a candidate whose scholarship adds to the intellectual vibrancy of our community, shows potential for distinction in their field, and helps strengthen Film Studies at OSU. We especially welcome candidates with a clear commitment to inclusive pedagogies and to fostering access for marginalized, underrepresented students.

The position consists of teaching (45%), research (45%), and service (10%). The teaching load is five courses over three quarters annually (fall, winter, and spring terms). Teaching responsibilities involve lower- and upper-division undergraduate courses, including general education courses, and/or graduate seminars in relevant film traditions, including topics of the candidate's design. Mentoring of students, including advising of theses, is expected at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Service includes committee-work for the School, College, and University. The position includes support for advancing one’s scholarship and faculty mentorship.

Oregon State University is committed to ensuring a collaborative and inclusive community. Faculty and staff in SWLF are responsible for building a curriculum, work environment, academic discipline, and campus climate sensitive to institutionalized systems of inequity and privilege. Individual contributions in these areas may be measured, in any given year, by annually reported activities in teaching, research, service, and/or outreach.

All candidates must have a strong record of teaching and a Ph.D. in Film/Media Studies or closely related field by time of appointment. Additional information about the School of Writing, Literature, and Film can be found on our website: https://liberalarts.oregonstate.edu/wlf.

Oregon State University is a public R1 land-grant institution committed to public outreach and engagement and motivated by educational equity. In letters of application, candidates should discuss their potential to contribute to these core values.
