Job Description
The Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy in the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences is seeking a full-time, tenure-track position (#F0199) at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2026.
A collegial department that promotes cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship, the department currently has 109 majors, of which 53 are preparing to be future teachers by concentrating in Teacher Preparation in History and Social Science Secondary Education. Longwood has a decades-long tradition of training the best teachers for Virginia, and our department's high placement rate demonstrates our ongoing commitment to this legacy. Our Civitae Core Curriculum supplements this mission by its focus on developing all alumni to be fully engaged citizens.
To this end, the department seeks a historian of U.S. History (preferably post-1900, but not exclusively) with experience teaching at the secondary level (grades 6-12). Successful candidates will be able to teach the Methods course for students seeking licensure in History and Social Science Secondary Education, both halves of US survey classes, courses to complement the current upper-level offerings in History, a co-taught (with Elementary Education faculty) course in US History and teaching methods, and courses supporting the Civitae Core Curriculum. The position will also supervise practicum and student teaching field experiences, so possession of an active Virginia teaching license, or eligibility to apply for one, is preferred.
Faculty responsibilities include teaching 12 credit-hours per semester, balanced between content-focused courses for all majors and skills-oriented courses for students in the Secondary Education concentration. While teaching is a priority at Longwood, the department prizes scholarship and supports active research. Service duties will include student advising and needful extra-curricular work at the department, college, or university levels. Depending on the load for field supervision, a course release is possible in heavy semesters.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.
Requirements
- Minimum Requirements: ABD or Ph.D. in U.S./American History. ABD candidates must have an expected completion date by August 2026 for preferred consideration. Preference will be given to specialists in the 20th century, but all fields are open.

- Teaching licensure preferred but not required.
- Candidates with demonstrated college teaching ability preferred.
