Position Description
The Department of Agricultural Sciences at Texas State University seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Instruction in Horticulture/Crop Science. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to student-centered teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and participate in departmental service. This faculty member will teach courses primarily in horticulture and with a regenerative agriculture approach. Courses may include any in the following areas: greenhouse and nursery management, plant identification, landscape and/or floral design, plant pathology, entomology/apiculture, pastor and range plants, range synecology, and/or landscape management. Course assignment will be determined based on areas of expertise. The ideal person is flexible, enjoys teaching a range of topics, and is willing to contribute to a growing and evolving department. This faculty will be expected to be the faculty advisor to at least one horticulturally-oriented student organization and potentially travel with students to regional and national horticultural expos and conferences periodically. The faculty member is also expected to help manage teaching facilities such as the teaching greenhouses and gardens on a daily basis throughout the year monitoring student workers and greenhouse equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Horticultural Sciences or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to teach effectively in horticulture courses including some or all of those outlined in the announcement.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to student-centered teaching and mentoring, including welcoming teaching practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching at the undergraduate level across multiple sub-disciplines.
- Evidence of curriculum development or program coordination.
- Experience and background in supervising student organizations.
- Expertise in managing greenhouse facilities.
- Background in teaching garden development and management.
- Ability to supervise or participate in graduate student instruction or mentoring.
- Familiarity with current trends in horticulture (e.g., sustainability, ag tech, integrated systems).
- Experience working collaboratively across disciplines or with outreach/extension components.
