Assistant Professor of Literacy Education (Tenure-Track)
Theory and Practice in Teacher Education

The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at The University of Tennessee is seeking an assistant professor for a position in literacy education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE). We seek a colleague to join an active research and teaching community. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Position begins August 2027.
The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit with faculty members housed in eight departments. TPTE, the College’s largest department, brings together experts across various education fields to prepare individuals for impactful careers in educational settings and beyond, to bridge innovative research and practice, and to serve communities through educational excellence. The department is organized into three units, and this position resides within the Language, Culture, and Teacher Education (LCTE) Unit.
Literacy education faculty conduct consequential research on reading and writing interventions, assessment development, motivation and affect, teacher preparation and professional development. Further, faculty members are committed to preparing educators for effective and engaging teaching in high need urban and rural communities. The successful candidate will join an active, collaborative, and interdisciplinary faculty committed to improving public education through exemplary research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate has a strong understanding of current literacy research and effective practices for teaching literacy in K-12 educational settings.
Responsibilities include:
· Designing, conducting and publishing scholarly research
· Pursuing external funding to support an active research agenda
· Teaching undergraduate and/or graduate classes in literacy education
· Collaborating with a team of faculty in development, delivery, and ongoing program evaluation of undergraduate and graduate courses
· Developing collaborative relationships with local schools, teachers, and community members
· Providing service and leadership to local/state and national/international professional organizations
· Fulfilling advising and administrative duties as needed by the department and the university.
