Job Description

San José State University’s School of Music seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music Education, starting August 1, 2026. The role centers on preparing future K–12 music teachers in a vibrant, inclusive campus community at the heart of Silicon Valley. We are committed to fostering artist-teachers and scholars who make an impact both in the classroom and through active engagement with the profession.

Primary duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate music education courses in instrumental, choral, and/or general methods, supervising student teachers, mentoring majors on licensure and placements, and collaborating with local and state educators. The successful candidate will be involved in curriculum development and program assessment aligned with NASM standards, maintain an active creative or scholarly profile, and contribute to committee and service work across the university.

Required qualifications include a doctorate in Music Education or a closely related field (ABD considered with degree by start), and at least three years of successful K–12 teaching experience. Preferred qualities include experience supervising student teachers, expertise across music pedagogy areas, professional association involvement, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
