Towson University Is Hiring an Assistant Professor of Music Theory

What the posting asks for and how to make your application stand out

Towson University has an assistant professor opening in music theory. If you're on this year's academic job market, this is the kind of posting that should make you stop skimming job boards and start working on one strong file.

You'll need a doctorate in music theory or a closely related field. You'll need evidence that you can teach written theory, aural skills, analysis, and at least one upper-level topic. You'll need a research record that can grow after the degree. And you'll need to follow the posting's instructions exactly, because public university search portals will not forgive missing documents.

The application runs through Towson's Taleo faculty portal. That system is blunt. When it asks for a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching philosophy, transcripts, and a sample syllabus, it means every file. Build your packet before you log in and you'll save yourself an afternoon of frustration.

Most candidates treat a job like this as a volume play—send the same materials to ten schools and hope one sticks. Music theory hiring does not work that way. The departmental search committee reads your materials looking for a reason to keep you in the pile. The cleaner and more specific the file, the more reasons you give them.

What a music theory faculty line demands

Towson's music department sits in the College of Fine Arts and Communication. Assistant professor postings in music theory at this kind of institution usually tilt toward teaching. You'll carry core theory courses, you'll teach or assist with musicianship and aural skills, and you'll be expected to serve on department committees once you're settled.

Research expectations are not an afterthought. The committee will want to see a dissertation completed or close to completion, conference activity, a sense of where your next projects are heading, and at least one proposal that can go out in your first year. But the interview rooms at a public university start with teaching talk. Be ready to explain how you teach first-semester harmony and what happens when a student hits a wall.

The strongest files don't read like a generic faculty ad. They name the actual classes they can teach, the methods they use, and the populations they've worked with. A candidate who says 'I taught four sections of Music Theory II and rebuilt the dictation quizzes' beats a candidate who writes 'passionate about student success' every time.

Read the posting before you write a word

Open Towson's faculty jobs portal and pull up the official description. Then open a plain document. Copy the required qualifications into two columns: what you can document immediately and what you can't yet prove. Your cover letter should spend its first two paragraphs on the first column.

If the posting lists a preferred qualification—mentoring first-generation students, teaching online, coordinating keyboard skills, or advising a student chapter—address it in one sentence with evidence. You don't need to stretch. A search committee can spot padding from across the room.

Now check the document list a second time. Public universities mean human resources rules. If the portal asks for a statement of teaching philosophy in PDF, don't upload a Word file with a different name. Small mistakes read as carelessness before the committee reads a word of your scholarship.

Make your materials easy to scan

Search committees often do the first read in under ten minutes. Put your name, the job title, your current status, and a one-line discipline marker at the top of the CV, not in a dense header that takes three lines. A reader should know in ten seconds that you hold a doctorate in music theory, where you earned it, and what you're doing now.

In the teaching statement, drop the philosophy abstractions. Describe one course you taught, one problem you saw, one thing you changed, and what happened after. Then describe the result. If you don't have a result, describe what you observed. Specific detail is the whole game.

For the research statement, tell the committee what your dissertation argues, which repertory it covers, what the next article or book chapter will be, and who the audience is. Don't bury the central claim at the end. Music theorists read for argument. Lead with yours.

If you need a fresh CV structure, start with the advice in How to write a winning academic CV.

Where most candidates lose the job

The biggest failure point is not research. It's obedience to the posting. Candidate tracking systems and HR prescreening reject incomplete files before the music department sees them. If the portal has supplemental questions, answer them and keep the answers specific.

The second failure point is mismatch. Some applicants send a theory file to every opening with 'music' in the title. A musicology file, an ethnomusicology file, a composition file, a K-12 choral file—search committees can tell within ten seconds that the candidate didn't read the ad. Don't be that file.

The third is the timing. Review dates matter. Once the committee sets a date, applications that arrive after it often sit unread. Submit before the review date even if the posting says open until filled.

The music theory market is small, so target carefully

There are not hundreds of assistant professor of music theory openings each year. The Society for Music Theory maintains a job listing service and resources for job seekers in the discipline. Federal labor data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks postsecondary teaching roles broadly, but music theory hiring is a thin slice of that total.

Because the market is thin, a precise application carries more weight than it would in a large field. You cannot afford to misfire on materials or miss a deadline. The same attention that goes into your dissertation chapter should go into the two pages a committee actually reads.

When you tailor the cover letter, mention Towson's department by name and show you know what the school is. You don't need to praise the campus in broad strokes. Just demonstrate that you looked at the course catalog and the faculty list, then connect your teaching to what they already offer. The department's current offerings and faculty profiles are on the Towson University Department of Music site.

What happens after you hit submit

You'll get an automated confirmation. Keep it. If the posting lists a review date, the committee may not meet until after that date. If you haven't heard in six weeks, that's not unusual for faculty searches. Public university timelines are slow, and sometimes the silence simply means the committee is still scheduling meetings.

Don't chase the search chair with unsolicited notes. One clear question about an unclear application requirement is reasonable. Repeated check-ins are not. The posting is your source of truth.

Use the waiting time to prepare a short teaching demonstration and a fifteen-minute research talk. Do it now, not when the interview invitation arrives, because invitations often come with a short turnaround.

Prepare before the interview arrives

Don't wait for an invitation. Write a one-page teaching demo plan now. Choose the concept you can explain in five minutes: secondary dominants, phrase structure, species counterpoint, or whatever you can make clear without ten minutes of setup.

Then rehearse your research talk with a timer. Prepare a ten-minute version and a fifteen-minute version. Committees remember the candidate who finished on time more than the one who raced through slide forty.

Look up the faculty in Towson's music department. Read one recent article or syllabus from someone you'd overlap with. You don't need to flatter them in the interview. You need to show you understand the department's work well enough to join it.

The portal will not negotiate

Towson uses a Taleo-based faculty hiring portal. That means you create an account, upload documents, answer screening questions, and track your status in the system. You cannot email materials to the chair instead. HR only sees what the portal holds.

Check your file size limits before you attempt to upload a portfolio. Compress large PDFs. Name every file without special characters. If the system accepts only one writing sample, choose your strongest chapter, not an entire dissertation.

After you submit, log back in once to confirm the status reads received or under review. Screenshot the confirmation page. Faculty candidates lose jobs every year because they assumed the upload finished when it didn't.

Do this one thing this week

Go to the official Towson application. Read the required qualifications and the document checklist. Then open your current CV and your generic cover letter and ask one question: can a reader see, in the top half of page one, that you fit this specific music theory line?

If not, fix the first half-page. Submit the file early. A strong, targeted application to one opening you can actually see yourself doing beats five rushed submissions that all say the same thing. You'll also find the condensed listing on AcademicJobs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

🎼What is the Assistant Professor of Music Theory position at Towson University?

Towson University has posted a faculty opening at the assistant professor rank in music theory. The official listing sits on the university's Taleo faculty jobs portal, and a condensed version appears on AcademicJobs.com. The position is in the Department of Music within the College of Fine Arts and Communication.

🏛️Is the Towson music theory assistant professor job tenure-track?

Assistant professor postings at U.S. public universities often carry tenure-track status, but some lines are term appointments. Check the official posting for the exact tracking language. If the posting does not say, ask the search chair or HR contact in the first interview.

📄What qualifications does the job require?

Most music theory searches ask for a doctorate in music theory or a closely related field by the start date. They also look for documented college teaching, research or conference activity, and a plan for future work. The official Towson posting lists the exact minimum qualifications, so read that first.

🎧What teaching duties are usually attached to this role?

Music theory faculty commonly teach written theory, musicianship, and aural skills. The specific load at Towson is described in the posting's duties section. Candidates should be ready to discuss first-year harmony, ear training, and at least one upper-level specialty.

💼How do I apply for the Towson University music theory job?

You apply through Towson's Taleo faculty jobs portal. Create an account, complete the profile, upload every required document, and answer the screening questions. Do not email application materials to the department unless the posting says otherwise.

🗂️What documents should I prepare before I start?

Prepare a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy, research statement, sample syllabus, transcripts, and contact details for references. Check the posting's document list before uploading, because extra files can slow down the reviewer or confuse the portal.

💰Does the posting list a salary?

The official posting is the source for salary details if they are published. Many public universities share pay only at the interview stage. If no range appears, ask the HR contact once you have been selected for a first-round conversation.

🗓️What is the timeline after I apply?

Faculty search timelines move slowly. The committee may not meet until after the review date in the posting. If you have not heard in six weeks, that is not necessarily a sign of rejection. Use the time to prepare a teaching demo and a short research talk.

🔎Where can I find more academic music theory jobs?

AcademicJobs.com indexes university positions across disciplines. The Society for Music Theory also maintains a job listing service for the field. Because music theory lines are relatively few, target each application instead of sending a generic file broadly.

🏆What makes a music theory application stand out?

Name the courses you can teach, give one concrete teaching example, lead your research statement with a clear argument, and match the posting's language. A file that sounds like a particular person beats a polished but generic one every time.

📬Can I contact the search committee directly after applying?

Avoid unsolicited messages to the search chair. One short question about an unclear application requirement is fine. Repeated check-ins are not. The posting and the automated portal are the best sources for status updates.

✅What should I do after I hit submit?

Save the confirmation page and log back in once to make sure your files show as received. Then prepare your teaching demonstration and research talk before an invitation arrives, because interview turnarounds are often short.
