Assistant Professor of Nursing
Job Description
Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor. This is a full-time fixed term position within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences/Department of Nursing and will start on August 17, 2026.
Description of College/School/Unit
The College of Nursing and Health Sciences provides innovative, programs in the areas of nursing, health systems, dental therapy and dental hygiene. We promote educational advancement through uniquely designed programs, community partnerships, scholarly activities, and academic excellence, guided by our mission to prepare students to enhance the health of under-served and diverse populations upon graduation. The College of Nursing and Health Sciences is located on the St. Paul campus, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The School/Academic Department: As part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences the Department of Nursing is committed to academic and scholarly excellence, community partnerships, and to providing a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs that lead to the building of lifelong careers and professionalism within the nursing field. The Nursing Department’s versatile programs and degree offerings cut across all levels of learning - bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral. We offer flexible options customized for those who are currently registered nurses (RN) and for those who are not yet registered nurses. Responsibilities
Faculty members are expected to:
- Effectively teach DNP Family Nurse Practitioner courses to a post-traditional student population and contribute to meaningful assessment of student learning.
- Teach courses primarily in the DNP program at doctoral and master level courses which may include clinical courses, theory, and scholarship courses.
- Develop curriculum in a DNP Advance Practice Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
- Teach in-person and distance education courses as needed by the department, college, or university
- Contribute meaningfully to the assessment of student learning at program and institutional levels.
- Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.
- Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
- Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
- Engage in service to the university and community.
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
- Provide excellent learning environments through in-person, online, and/or hybrid course modalities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Eligibility for unencumbered Minnesota RN licensure. Minnesota licensure must be obtained prior to start date.
- A minimum of a master’s degree in nursing and currently enrolled in a doctoral degree in nursing,
- Five years' experience as a family nurse practitioner, including some leadership experience
- Active national certification as a family nurse practitioner.
- Demonstrated potential for success in teaching and professional service activities.
- A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.
- Effective Communication skills (written verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an institution with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse workforce and student population.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to work collegially with faculty and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- A completed terminal degree in the specified discipline(s). Doctoral Degree in Nursing
- Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.
- Experience developing course curricula at a post-secondary institution.
- Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at a post-secondary institution.
- Professional development and/or expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.
- Experience as an academic advisor for students at a post-secondary institution.
- Experience teaching in nursing education.
- Experience developing nursing curricula.
- Experience utilizing a holistic nursing framework.
- Experience with leading DNP scholarship projects.
Salary Range
$64,066.00 - $186,015.00 Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement. Employment for this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement for the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO), which can be found on the Minnesota State Employee and Labor Relations website.
