Job Description

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of The Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering (Reservoir Engineering) to begin Fall 2027.

TAMIU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with over 8,000 students, located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The University advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement, and public service, with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence. This is a tenure-track, nine-month Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering position. A reduced teaching load supports research development. Primary duties will include establishing an independent, externally funded research program in reservoir engineering; contributing to the BS in Petroleum Engineering with primary responsibility for teaching reservoir engineering courses; and mentoring student research and senior design projects. Duties also include teaching other Petroleum Engineering and engineering courses as needed; supporting recruitment, accreditation, and School service; and collaborating with academic, industry, and government partners. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The School of Engineering offers ABET-accredited programs in Systems, Computer, and Petroleum Engineering. Its BS in Computer Science and MS in Systems Engineering launched in 2026, and its BS in Civil Engineering launches in 2027. This position will expand Petroleum Engineering faculty capacity to meet significant enrollment growth. This position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering to hire 10 permanent faculty members, eight tenure-track and two instructional, beginning Fall 2027.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in reservoir engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof; be able to teach courses in reservoir engineering; mentor student research; and establish an independent research program in this area. Required expertise in reservoir engineering includes demonstrated strength in one or more of the following: reservoir characterization and simulation; enhanced oil recovery; unconventional or fractured reservoirs; history matching and uncertainty quantification; coupled flow-geomechanics; CO2-EOR and geologic carbon storage; geothermal reservoir engineering; or subsurface gas or hydrogen storage. Experience or demonstrated ability to pursue externally funded research and collaborate with industry or government partners is especially desirable.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the University.

Application Process

The completed employment application must include:

  • A letter of interest or cover letter that addresses the candidate's qualifications for the position.
