Position description:
The ideal applicant will have a Ph.D. in philosophy by the start of the appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in their area of expertise, offer courses in philosophy at the introductory and advanced levels, and contribute courses for Union's First-Year Inquiry and General Education programs. The teaching load is 2 courses per term with a one course reduction in the first year. Union College’s academic year consists of three 10-week trimesters.
About the Philosophy Department:
The department hosts one of the most impressive Speaker Series of any undergraduate institution in the country and is also home to Ephemeris , an undergraduate philosophy journal, founded in 2001. The department also has a very active student-run philosophy club. The faculty have research interests in metaphysics, epistemology, ancient Greek philosophy, early modern philosophy, Latin American philosophy, feminist philosophy, aesthetics, social and political philosophy, Africana philosophy, and philosophy of mind.
Union College also has a vibrant set of interdisciplinary programs, such as Law and Humanities, Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, and Environmental Policy, to name a few. The successful hire can develop courses in their area of expertise that may contribute to one or more of these interdisciplinary programs, a complete list of which may be found at: https://www.union.edu/interdisciplinary-studies. Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $81,500-$83,500. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
