Job Summary
Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a full-time, tenure track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Public History in the Department of History & Philosophy with a preferred start date of August 2026. This is a nine-month contracted position. This position is for work to be performed in the state of Georgia.
Responsibilities
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public history. Faculty are expected to teach courses of variable size and modalities, including large class sizes when necessary.
- Service to include coordination of the undergraduate public history minor, coordination of undergraduate internships for the Department of History & Philosophy, curatorial support and coordination of student projects funded by the Department of Museums, Archives and Rare Books, work with campus and community partners on public history initiatives, preservation support to the university including service on the University Architectural Review Committee.
- Summer work in support of the Department of Museums, Archives and Rare Books is expected in addition to supervision of summer interns and teaching in summer semester when necessary, contingent upon available funding.
- Research agenda may include traditional scholarship as well as peer-reviewed public scholarship in the form of National Register nominations, exhibitions, and other forms of scholarly work made available to the public.
Teaching assignments will be based on earned degrees and SACSCOC Faculty Credentials Guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree, or the foreign equivalent, in History or Public History is required at the time of hire.
- Record of teaching at the undergraduate level in public history.
- Successful experience managing public history projects such as exhibitions, oral history projects, National Register nominations, and historic site surveys.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to teach all the courses in the KSU Public History Minor curriculum.
- Teaching field(s) compatible with department expertise.
- Effectiveness in teaching in different modalities and different course sizes, including large classes, if necessary.
- Evidence of previous experience in public history in a museum, historical society, archive, or historical/cultural agency.
- Demonstrated record of successful community engagement and outreach.
- Evidence of scholarship/creative activities.
- Prior success in obtaining extramural funding.
