Assistant Professor of Sociology (Health, Medicine and Society)
Job Summary:
The Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure track position in Sociology at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2026. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Sociology, and expertise in Health, Medicine and Society. Experience in teaching, as well as a publication record in a specific field of research is preferable.
While the area of research is open, we have a preference for materials for Sociology-Health, Medicine and Society research.
About the Department
The Department of Sociology has four faculty members and over 90 students. The Department offers three types of undergraduate major programs including Sociology, Sociology-Crime and Social Justice and Socioligy-Health, Medicine and Society. The Department faculty are proud of the quality of instruction, undergraduate research, instrumentation, and the accomplishments of their students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Candidates should be committed to excellence and continual growth in teaching, to maintaining an active research program that involves undergraduates, and to offering support or leadership in service to the department, community, college, and university. Interested candidates should demonstrate a capacity and willingness to effectively manage a 4-4 teaching load, encompassing a variety of courses across all levels. In addition to the introductory course and courses in the candidate's area of expertise, a successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses required for sociology majors such as theory. The ideal candidate will contribute to the university's mission to advance social justice through preparing students for leadership and service by establishing opportunities for undergraduate research, fostering community partnerships aligned with the mission and the curriculum, or offering leadership for engaging students in policy arenas adjacent to the

Xavier University of Louisiana, founded by St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1925, is Catholic and historically Black.
