Assistant Professor of Spanish (Tenure - Track)
The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Berry College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish with a specialization in linguistics to begin in August 2026. We seek applicants from various subfields of linguistics who can engage the unique needs of native and heritage speakers. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to mentoring students, proficiency-based learning, and will take the lead in designing and teaching courses that address native and heritage speakers' specific needs, as well as build on the skills that they already possess.
The department is committed to providing students with the opportunity of becoming proficient in the languages, literatures, and cultures of the languages it offers, and to gain cross- and intercultural competency and global awareness. It seeks to graduate majors and minors with advanced communicative skills in speaking, reading, and writing, international cultural knowledge, and a sophisticated understanding of the problems and promises that a globalized world presents. Spanish is among the most popular minor programs at the college and has a longstanding community engagement program with the Spanish-speaking community in our area, as part of the college's Academic Community Engagement (ACE) courses. The department also boasts graduates who have won numerous prestigious fellowships, such as the Fulbright. The department supports its faculty in professional development, research, and creative pursuits as well as faculty-led study abroad programs.
The ideal candidate will have experience and enthusiasm for all levels of the Spanish curriculum: lower- and intermediate-level courses and upper-level courses, including courses for heritage speakers. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and scholarship are aligned with and will advance Berry's Good Neighbor culture and commitment to community engagement. The position includes a 3/3 load during the academic year with the opportunity to teach upper-level courses in the candidate's field of experience on a rotating basis.
Requirements:
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics or a closely related field, and candidates who are currently ABD should earn their Ph.D. by the date of employment.
