Central Connecticut State University invites applications to join the Special Education department as a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2026. About CCSU’s Special Education Department

The Department of Special Education and Interventions offers several master's-level programs as well as a Transition Specialist Official Certificate Program. Nationally accredited by The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and recognized by Master's Degree Online as one of the best special education master's programs in the nation, our programs emphasize carefully sequenced classes and field experiences that enable our students to gradually increase their knowledge and skills in the field of special education. Department of Special Education and Interventions faculty also works collaboratively with public schools to improve the educational experiences of PreK-12 students with disabilities and promote appropriate research/scholarly activity, and community engagement.

Position Profile

The position may include: teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses specifically focused in Special Education; advising graduate students; assisting in program accreditation process; and participating in department, professional unit, and university committees. The successful candidate may also be responsible for supervision of field experiences and is expected to effectively teach and advise a diverse student population, engage in ongoing research and other discipline-related scholarly activities, and make professional and university service contributions. Demonstrated achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service is required for tenure and promotion. Commitment to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body is expected.

Applicant Evaluative Criteria

Applicant profiles and supplementary materials will be evaluated for appointment based on the following:

Education:

All applicants must possess an earned doctorate in Special Education or equivalent with an emphasis on students with special needs at the elementary and/or secondary level (ABD candidates will be considered with a completion date of August 1, 2026).

Experience and Training:

  • Three (3) years or more of professional experience in a K-12 setting
  • Experience in data-based decision making
  • Documented quality, or promise of quality, in teaching, scholarship, service, and discipline-related professional activity
  • Competence in integrating technology into instruction

Ideal Candidate

Preference will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Earned special education teaching certificate and public-school teaching experience
  • Experience in general and special education setting within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS)
  • Experience teaching courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
  • Experience with supervision of pre-service teachers
  • Experience supporting students with teacher performance assessments
  • Working knowledge and evidence of implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Experience in seeking external funding

Compensation and Employee Benefits

In accordance with the Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collective Bargaining Union Contract, compensation for this position is at the rank of Assistant Professor for 2024-2025.
