Assistant Professor of Teaching (tenure track) - Lead Academic Coordinator for Clinical Education
The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) seeks an outstanding individual for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching (tenure track). This position will primarily be based at the UBC Point Grey site in Vancouver, BC.
The School’s Master of Science (MSc) programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Canadian University Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. The MSc audiology and speech-language pathology (SLP) programs are rigorous and scholarly, and deliver a high standard of instruction and creative opportunities for learning. The MSc SLP program has become fully distributed, with two student cohorts, one in Vancouver and the other in Victoria. Through its active research programs, the School plays a leading role in advancing knowledge of human communication and related disciplines, and in the translation of novel research outcomes into best practices in many areas of audiology and SLP.
Reporting to the Director of the UBC School of Audiology and Speech Sciences, the successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the MSc programs, provide mentorship and training to MSc graduate students, and undertake educational leadership activities, including curriculum development and innovation and other teaching and learning initiatives with impact beyond the classroom. The candidate will be expected to participate in multiple service activities and committees at the School, University and the broader academic and professional community. They will be expected to work collaboratively in diverse groups to advance the strategic priorities of the School and the Faculty.
The successful candidate will also serve as the Lead Academic Coordinator for Clinical Education and will be an essential member of the School’s Executive Team. They will work with students, faculty, and clinicians across the University and clinical sectors, including provincial and national professional organizations and will be expected to register as an audiologist or a speech-language pathologist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.
In this role, they will be responsible for:
- Providing strategic and operational leadership of the clinical coordination team to deliver the clinical education components of the audiology and SLP programs, including placement planning, clinical educator mentorship, student performance management, and clinical educator engagement.
- Overseeing and advancing the clinical education program to ensure a high-quality, innovative learning experience for audiology and speech-language pathology students, aligned with School, Faculty, University, and accreditation standards, and contributing to the broader advancement of clinical education at UBC and across Canadian entry-to-practice programs.
- Providing mentorship and direction during student remediation and probation processes.
- Representing informed perspectives on clinical education to guide program and curricular decisions.
- Building and sustaining effective relationships with academic and clinical stakeholders.
- Delivering clinical education results/outcomes in collaboration with academic and clinical stakeholders.
The successful candidate will have the following:
- a Master’s degree or higher;
- current full license as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist within Canada and eligibility to register with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC);
- a minimum of seven years of relevant clinical experience;
- demonstrated evidence of ability and commitment to teaching, and promise of educational leadership;
- experience in the provision of clinical supervision and mentorship of audiology or speech-language pathology students;
- excellent oral and written communication skills;
- a demonstrated record of leadership and innovation in clinical education in audiology or speech-language pathology;
- additional formal training in curriculum development or clinical education will be considered an asset.
The expected salary range for this position is $135,000 to $145,000 per annum.
