Assistant Professor of Teaching, Without Review
The Department of Physical Therapy at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a part-time 0.5 FTE faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching, Without Review for a term of one-year. This position will be based at the MPT Program site in Surrey, BC.
The UBC Department of Physical Therapy’s key coursework relates to the education of students in preparation for practice as Physical Therapists. The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program is rigorous, scholarly and delivers a high standard of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, with the goal of providing students with a strong foundation for practice in the profession. The MPT program has a unique model of distributed teaching and learning to support the four student cohorts in Vancouver, Prince George, Surrey and Victoria. The expansion of the program aims to address Physical Therapy retention and recruitment issues throughout the province. The Department also provides leadership in Physical Therapy research and the translation of novel research outcomes into best practices in this field of healthcare, and supports internationally educated Physical Therapists to prepare for practice in Canada.
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Physical Therapy, the successful candidate will be expected to teach in the MPT Program as well as participate in the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning activities. The successful candidate will be expected to provide mentorship and training to graduate learners, collaborate with other programs and departments, and be engaged in educational leadership activities, including curriculum development and innovation, and other teaching and learning initiatives. The successful candidate will also assume the leadership responsibilities of the MPT Fraser Valley Site Lead, Academic. The Site Lead, Academic role will be responsible for the overall administration and direction of the MPT Fraser Valley site and support the expansion and development of the MPT program as a whole, in alignment with program objectives and national accreditation standards. At the Fraser Valley site, the Site Lead, Academic, will work with the Regional Clinical Lead and the Site Manager to ensure a comprehensive and robust educational experience for MPT students. This position involves working with students, faculty, clinicians, and academics across the University and clinical sectors, and the BC professional organizations (e.g., the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC). The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the Department and the Faculty and foster an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to fostering an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged.
The successful candidate will hold an entry-to-practice degree in Physical Therapy and be licensed to practice as a Physical Therapist in Canada. A post-graduate degree in a related discipline (e.g. education, leadership, or research) is an asset. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability and commitment to teaching, ideally including previous teaching experience with Physical Therapy or other health professional students, and the promise of educational leadership.
In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and respect of diverse perspectives. Experience in collaborating and bringing forward projects with diverse groups, including colleagues, students, and/or stakeholders, is valued.
The expected salary for this 0.5 FTE position is $60,000-65,000 per annum. The Faculty of Medicine is committed to offering equitable and competitive salaries, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
