Position Summary
Full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Modern Languages department beginning in fall 2026. The department of Modern Languages invites applications for a tenure-track position in Modern Languages beginning fall 2026. Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and master’s courses in second language methodology, second language literacy, and educational technology, both in person and online; maintaining an active scholarship/research agenda; advising students; providing scheduled office hours and support to students outside of the classroom; and engaging in service to the department, school, and university.

Salary Range: $62,500-$65,630
Major Responsibilities
The Modern Languages Department offers majors and minors in Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language; degrees leading to New York State teaching certification in Adolescence Education Spanish and K-12 Teaching English as a Second Language; and an M.S. Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language, delivered fully online and asynchronously. In addition, the Modern Languages Department offers courses in ASL, French, Italian, Spanish, as well as Teaching English as a Second Language to the campus community. The teaching load for a TESOL assistant professor is 3/3 (50% in person and 50% online, asynchronously).
The department typically hires for the courses/subject areas listed below but this list is not all inclusive. Other courses/subject areas may become available within the department.
- ESL 400: Teaching Reading in the Second Language Classroom
- ESL 401: Teaching Writing in the Second Language Classroom
- ESL 404: ESL Literacy in the Elementary School
- ICC 523: Integrating Technology in the second Language Classroom
Responsibilities:
- Teach a total of 18 credits per year (9 credits per semester);
- Develop an active scholarship or research agenda;
- Provide service to the department, school, and university;
- Provide scheduled office hours, act as academic advisor, and support students outside of the classroom by serving as advisor to student organizations, supervising student assistants, research assistants, or other internship experiences;
- Support the infusion of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the departmental and/or college-wide curriculum; and
- Participate in mentoring process with assigned mentor to support professional development.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
This position reports to the academic department chair and works closely with department faculty.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in TESOL or a closely related field; ABD will be considered with completion date prior to the start of the appointment; background in literacy instruction.
- Demonstrated experience in using technology in teaching and learning.
- Superior fluency in English
- Graduate course work in literacy instruction, linguistics, English grammar, and second language acquisition.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant teaching experience at the university level, including teaching online, including synchronous and asynchronous courses.
- Demonstrated experience teaching ESL / EFL or a language other than English.
- Proficiency in a language other than English.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to manage course organization tools such as Brightspace
- Effective interpersonal and organizational skills
- Graduate course work in literacy
