Job Description:

Russell Sage College invites applications for a dedicated and student-centered Assistant Professor of Practice in Chemistry to join the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. The successful candidate will teach introductory lecture and laboratory courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry using evidence-based, inclusive pedagogical practices that support diverse learners. They will be expected to strengthen students' quantitative and scientific reasoning, integrate applied and interdisciplinary examples relevant to health and STEM fields. The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with colleagues in Nursing, Nutrition Science, and other programs to refine course content and ensure the chemistry curriculum aligns with institutional learning goals. The teaching load will include three distinct foundational courses: (1) an introductory general chemistry course, with an associated laboratory, that serves Nursing, Nutrition, and other health science students and covers essential topics such as chemical calculations, atomic and molecular structure, states of matter, electrochemistry, toxicology, environmental chemistry, nuclear chemistry, and the application of these principles to real-world issues like drug safety, pollution, daily chemical phenomena, and climate change; (2) an introductory organic and biochemistry survey course, also with a laboratory component, that introduces the major classes of organic compounds before moving into core biochemical concepts including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, metabolism, and nucleic acids; and (3) an introductory biochemistry course that provides a deeper exploration of biochemical pathways, focusing on the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, with emphasis on pathway interconnections and regulatory mechanisms. In addition to these primary teaching responsibilities, the position includes the opportunity to teach an upper-level biochemistry course on a biannual basis.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging lectures, demonstrations, and laboratory activities for introductory chemistry and biochemistry courses, including lab-based instruction.
  • Create an inclusive, student-centered learning environment that fosters scientific reasoning, quantitative literacy, and curiosity-driven inquiry.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain syllabi, assessments, laboratory experiments, and instructional materials aligned with departmental standards and interdisciplinary program needs.
  • Collaborate with faculty from Nursing, Nutrition Science, and other programs to ensure curricular coherence, strengthen prerequisite alignment, and embed relevant real-world applications.
  • Provide academic mentorship, advising, and constructive feedback to support student learning, retention, and progression in STEM and health professions fields.
  • Maintain a safe, well-organized, and compliant laboratory environment that supports hands-on, experiential learning.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to chemical and biochemical education, inclusive pedagogy, and quantitative reasoning.

Service Expectations

  • Participate in departmental service, including curriculum development, program review, assessment, and departmental meetings.
  • Contribute to college-wide service, such as academic committees, governance structures, and institutional initiatives.
  • Support student recruitment and retention by participating in admissions events, outreach activities, and prospective student engagement.
  • Promote and uphold the college's commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning.

The estimated base academic year salary for this position is $55,000, commensurate with experience.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, organic chemistry, or biochemistry
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level, with experience in laboratory-based instruction preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong interest in biochemistry and ability to teach biochemistry-focused coursework is an added advantage.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive, evidence-based teaching and strengthening students' quantitative and scientific reasoning skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across programs and contribute actively to departmental and institutional service.
