The Department of Theatre, Dance, & Media seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre History position beginning August 1, 2027. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in Theatre History and related areas of Theatre Studies, contributing to the department's production and educational programs, and providing service to the department, college, and University.
The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in theatre history, dramatic literature, critical theory, performance analysis, or a related field, as well as a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student mentorship. The position offers opportunities to contribute to the department's interdisciplinary curriculum and to engage students in the historical, cultural, theoretical, and analytical dimensions of theatre and performance.

Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for teaching a full 4/4 course load in Theatre, including courses in Theatre History I, Theatre History II, Play Analysis, and Theatre Appreciation. The successful candidate will contribute to the department's Theatre Studies curriculum through instruction that connects historical, theoretical, literary, and performance-based approaches to the study of theatre.
Additional teaching assignments may include courses such as Voice and Diction, Acting I, Stage Movement, and Stage Management, depending on the candidate's qualifications, expertise, and departmental instructional needs.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Teach undergraduate courses in Theatre History and related areas of Theatre Studies.
- Develop and deliver engaging, rigorous instruction appropriate to a diverse undergraduate student population.
- Incorporate appropriate historical, theoretical, literary, and performance-based perspectives into coursework.
- Advise and mentor students in areas related to theatre studies and the candidates area(s) of expertise.
- Contribute to the development and assessment of the department's curriculum.
- Participate in the department's production and performance activities as appropriate to the candidate's expertise and departmental needs.
- Provide service to the Department, College, University, profession, and/or community.
- Maintain an active program of scholarship, creative activity, or other professional engagement appropriate to the candidates field and the expectations of a tenure-track faculty appointment.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff across Theatre, Dance, & Media and the broader College of the Arts.
Typical Allocation of Duties:
Teaching and scholarship - 80%
Teaches classes and conducts/presents research in the employee's academic discipline.
Service - 20%
Participates in service at the department, college, and university levels.
Required Qualifications
- A terminal degree in Theatre History, Critical Theory, Dramatic Literature, Performance Analysis, Performance Studies or a related field by the time of appointment.
- Demonstrated expertise in theatre history, dramatic literature, critical theory, performance analysis, or a closely related area.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate students effectively.
- Ability to teach Theatre History I, and II, Play Analysis, and Theatre Appreciation.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in an academic and production-oriented environment.
- Commitment to student mentorship and undergraduate education.
- Ability to contribute to the department, college, university, and/or professional community through service.
Preferred Qualifications
- A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant's career stage.
- College-level teaching experience in Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, Play Analysis, Theatre Appreciation, or related courses.
- Expertise in one or more areas of theatre history, performance studies, critical theory, dramatic literature, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to teach additional theatre courses such as Voice and Diction, Acting I, Stage Movement, or Stage Management.
- Experience mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and educational experiences.
- Evidence of scholarly or creative activity appropriate to the applicant's field and career stage.
- Experience contributing to theatre production, direction, performance, or other professional activities.
