Assistant Professor of Violin (TT)

Job Description

Assistant Professor of Violin (TT)

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions:

The Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific announces a full-time tenure-track appointment for Assistant Professor of Violin. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative teacher/performer whose background, professional performing accomplishments, and pedagogy will attract and retain students to the wide variety of program offerings at Pacific's Conservatory.

  • The expectation is to develop and then sustain a studio of 16 music major violinists at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Excellent applied lesson teaching is the primary responsibility and is expected to constitute roughly 2/3rds of the teaching duties in early years. The additional 3rd of the early years teaching duties will be based upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
  • The incumbent will be expected to build a career of first regional and, over time, national, distinction as a musician, violinist, and pedagogue, one perceived as a clear advocate for and mentor to HS and MS orchestra students, and their teachers.
  • In collaboration with Pacific's ensemble and applied faculty, the selected candidate's career arc and skills must be sufficient to recruit, retain, and sustain a collegiate/pre-professional-level studio of violinist music majors.
  • Key is the candidate's ability to recruit, retain, and develop string students who enter Pacific at collegiate and/or pre-professional levels.

University of the Pacific recognizes that diversity, equity, and inclusion is foundational to the success of our valued students and employees. We prioritize policy and decision-making that demonstrates awareness of, and responsiveness to, the ways socio-cultural forces related to race, gender, ability, sexuality, socio-economic status, etc. impede or propel students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned MM in Music or the professional equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College level experience highly desirable.
  • A steadfast commitment to inclusion and equity as a foundational strength in music and education.
  • Proven expertise as an innovative performer and teacher, conversant with contemporary music, and skilled in a range of canonical and contemporary violin pedagogies.
  • A record of accomplishment in orchestral and ensemble settings and ability to teach students to model professional expectations in such settings.
  • An ability to attract, develop and mentor forward-thinking student musicians at levels appropriate to their major.
  • Potential for increasingly national reach as a violin performer and collaborator in professional and educational settings.
  • Being a part of a highly motivated and invested faculty that puts student learning at the forefront of the university's mission.
  • Performing and pedagogical experience with a range of music that includes, but is not limited to canonical works.
  • Proven evidence of the ability to attract, retain, and inspire diverse students across multiple areas of interest.
  • An ability to develop, mentor, and teach forward-thinking and relevant 21st century musicians at a level appropriate to their major.
  • Demonstrated ability as a performer and collaborator as an ensemble musician in varied settings, as a soloist, and in other performance and/or educational settings.
  • Experience in developing multi-faceted and entrepreneurial musical concepts that can be delivered through studio teaching, performance, and/or in class settings.
  • Being a part of a highly motivated and invested faculty that puts student learning at the forefront of the university's mission.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
